We recently connected with Lisa Roers and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Corporate America often mistakes “checking the box” training for true leadership development. Too many companies focus on teaching managers to pass a test or complete a compliance module, rather than equipping them to apply those skills in the real-world pressure cooker of business. I’ve seen organizations celebrate a new certification while the leader who earned it still struggles to inspire their team or navigate conflict effectively.
High-potential managers are promoted after finishing an online leadership course—meanwhile BETTER leadership is demonstrated by team members who just don’t have a box checked. AND, within three months, half the team leaves or checks out because no one had shown the promoted leader how to translate theory into actual day-to-day leadership. The gap between learning and putting that knowledge into action is where organizations win or lose their talent—and it’s exactly why I focus on putting Agile in Action, and reigniting the human element of Corporate America so we can move past the theory, and into ACTION. We are not robots… and that is a very good thing!!

Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a leadership consultant, speaker, and trainer with over 26 years of corporate success, specializing in helping organizations reignite the human element in leadership. My flagship program, Agile in Action, equips leaders to move beyond theory—transforming check-the-box training into real-world impact that inspires teams, improves retention, and drives results. Through Leading LIFE and my weekly Sunshine🔆Cafe Podcast (120,000 subscribers), I also help individuals cultivate the habits, resilience, and clarity they need to lead well in both work and life.
What sets me apart is the blend of deep corporate expertise and a personal life-altering health journey that taught me the value of sustainable, whole-person leadership—where productivity, well-being, and purpose work together to create spectacular, fulfilling outcomes. We all have a leadership role to play, and I help leaders who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected gain practical tools, relevant strategies, and the confidence to lead with agility and authenticity.
I’m most proud when I see leaders not only hit business goals, but also foster teams that truly thrive. Teaching people to understand human behavior—and how it shapes everything we do—is a superpower we can all develop. It’s right there, waiting for us to reach out and grab it.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A few years ago, my life took an unexpected turn when a serious and complex health condition turned my world upside down. This condition wiped out my knees and hips and made it painful and sometimes impossible. to walk! For two years, I bounced between 26 different doctors, endless tests, and treatmentsand appointments, then pharmaceuticals – all of which caused more harm than good. I never got answers from those doctors. I never got a path forward other than take this drug – indefinitely!! I could have let frustration win, but instead, I made a decision: if I couldn’t rely on the system to get me well, I would take ownership of my own health and learn to be my own self advocate.
I began researching relentlessly, experimenting safely, tracking patterns, documenting and making intentional changes to my lifestyle, nutrition, and mindset. Slowly, I rebuilt my health—without the crutches of damaging medications—proving to myself that resilience isn’t just about “pushing through,” but about adapting, learning, and leading yourself through uncertainty. AND to never ever EVER put your health solely in the hands of someone else unless you understand exactly what they are doing.
That journey didn’t just save my life—it reshaped how I lead and how I teach leadership today. It also shaped how I look at life in TOTAL now – our wealth and success is NOTHING if we lose our health – we need BOTH. I learned that true strength is sustainable, that well-being fuels performance, and that the most effective leaders are those who care for the whole person, starting with themselves, but extending out to their teams as well.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Lesson I had to unlearn: Perfect doesn’t exist.
I grew up far too quickly, stepping into the role of the one who succeeded and took care of everyone else. My worth felt tied to perfect scores—the 4.0 GPA, the high test results, the flawless image on the outside. That perfectionism drove success, but it also trapped me.
Over time, I had to unlearn the idea that “perfect” is the goal. The truth is, scrappy and good enough are often the stepping stones we need to walk into our next chapter. Real progress comes from embracing mistakes and failure as the very pathway to growth.
Today, I approach life and leadership the way I teach others to approach their work—like Agile. One slice of value at a time. Move forward, learn from what happens, and improve as you go. You don’t get to the next level by standing still—you get there by taking the next imperfect step.
