We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Pfeiffer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I had worked for a cosmetic surgeon and a dermatologist as their esthetician. I was amazed at some of the procedures they would perform on the skin, one after another. Many times not saying no to a client when they should have. I was amazed at the endless medications they would prescribe and all with little or terrible results. Inevitably making the skin worse. I knew there had to be a better way to heal and treat all issues with the skin. From Aging to acne and scarring and sun damage. I realized that we all actually have healthy, normal skin but it is underlying issues that cause the skin to have problems.. Wearing foundation and concealer, poor diet and gut health and bad products and sunscreens. I started to do a one facial for all, and I was amazed at what it accomplished with my clients. When I decided to go out and find my first salon, and be on my own I was terrified! However I knew I had a gift and I knew that if a client experienced my facials , they would be amazed as well. So when I first open any of my Peaches Skin Care Salons, we do the facials complimentary for the first couple weeks. This practice has served me well for almost 40 years. Getting a client in the door is everything, but if you truly believe in your gift, once you do they will stay.
Lisa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started as a make up artist and then realized that most of the time I was covering up issues not giving anyone beautiful skin. I started to work with physicians, both cosmetic and dermatologist, and I was amazed at the really terrible things they did for the skin. Many times not asking what the client used at home or if they wore makeup or the sunscreen they used. They always wanted to write a prescription or do a procedure.
I became an esthetician and continued to learn and work with as many physicians and beauty products as I could. I found so many products were simply watered down with fragrances and color and most had no ingredients that were essential for healthy skin. I watched as people purchased product after product and yet covered up their faces with layer upon layer of foundation and concealers. I noticed a trend in the beauty industry of ageism and the continual message to women that said, if they aged they were no longer beautiful or valuable and to feel badly about aging or moving their faces or God forbid having a wrinkle. I watched in horror as more and more younger men and women change their faces for this ridiculous standard set by the beauty industry, marketing and social media.
I was determined to change things.
As I grew my title grew, my expertise grew and I become a Holistic Master Esthetician. Teaching both men and women how to age with grace and to have beautiful healthy skin without needles or procedures.
I expect each of my Master Estheticians to do the facial I have created to the exact precision that I teach them, and I maintained a clean and healthy environment for people to thrive and for their skin and self esteem to heal.
We also created a line of skin care that I believe is closer to food for the skin. Then any other product in the industry. We pride ourselves on using the finest organic and healthy ingredients for both the skin and body. Cruelty free and natural and organic.
I am proud of the fact they we are the absolute best in the skin care business and our clients see results every time. We practice what we preach and not one of my Master Estheticians has injected or had a procedure or wears foundation or concealer. A very rare thing in our industry.
I can absolutely fix anything with skin, naturally and holistically.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I don’t come from money or parents that told me to go to college or helped to lift me up. I come from a single mother with plenty of stepfathers and a life of anxiety and fear and stress. I was also in the Foster Care System as a child. I knew from an early age that the only person that was going to help me, was me. I didn’t want to ever be poor again. I didn’t want to ever go hungry again and if I was going to have children, they were going to have new shoes and a place to call home. That has been the driving force in my life, helping my family and helping others. I am not someone who sits still. I am not someone who waits for someone else to do it. I am the type of person to go and get it done myself, some thing that can be a good thing and a bad thing. I’ve learned to surround myself with good people. Although there have been times that bad people do get in, but you learn as you grow, and you grow as you learn I’ve always told my children that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. I feel this is my gift to help men and women feel they are enough, they are beautiful, and that they have a unique and beautiful gift that others do not have, and they need to embrace that. The biggest thing I would tell a new entrepreneur, would be to never give up. Never let anyone tell you you can’t, and keep moving forward even when you fail. I have had loss so many times and then a pandemic that closed my salons for over a year, however, I pivoted and I figured it out, and I came back in a new way! As long as your message and your gift is something that inspires you. You will always be able to climb the mountain. Find your muse or someone you look up to, and learn from them, and strive to be as good as them, and never ever give up.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Simple, do not try to help people that won’t help themselves. I have hired so many women that came from bad backgrounds and I tried to help them to be their best, and to find a gift that could change their lives in their families lives, but many times those same women were the ones that took advantage of me. I learned a little to late to stop acting like I was God and just pick the right person for the job. People who take advantage of you will have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives. Stay true to who you are and your core beliefs and you will always be successful. Don’t let others bring you down or make you doubt yourself and your journey
