We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Morton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
A client contacted me to schedule an initial consultation to discuss new flooring and other ideas. I arrived with my bags of samples ready to dive in. Like any other first appointment, we said hello, and then I asked for a quick walk-through of the house so I could get acclimated to the space. Afterward, we went to the kitchen table to sit down and discuss all her needs, and that’s when the energy instantly shifted. She looked me in the eyes and said, “Lisa, I’m dying, and I need your help to set up my space so that my family can go on living in this house after I’m gone.” As you can imagine, I was in a bit of a shock. She explained further that she’d battled several rounds of cancer and was at a point where she couldn’t fight anymore. She insisted that her family be able to go on living and thriving after she was gone. She wanted her family to feel supported during the difficult times ahead and for them to feel encouraged to go on living their lives. She asked for my help creating this space for them. The home needed new flooring and a new sofa, and we also rearranged some of her existing pieces. I utilized my knowledge of Feng Shui to enhance the space further. I incorporated plenty of earth elements for a sense of grounding and comfort for the family while also bringing in the wood element for healing and renewal. We did this through colors, textures, and pieces she already had around the house.
This project was incredibly fulfilling and my sign that the right people would be put on my path so that I could help them. While I’ve had the honor to take on several similar projects, this was the first time I felt that “click” and felt called to this work and realized how valuable it is.
Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’d worked as an interior designer for over ten years before I began studying Feng Shui and Space Clearing. This work instantly intrigued me, but after completing my Feng Shui and Space Clearing training, I worried my clients wouldn’t “get it.” While I know how powerful these principles are, I wasn’t sure my design clients would be willing to grasp the concepts. I then realized I didn’t need to push this on my current clients and had to be confident that the right clients would find me. It took just one interaction with a client to trust that I would connect with those who needed my help.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Intuition is essential in this work.
I’ve always been relatively intuitive when walking into spaces. I instantly know how the room feels and if it needs a shift to be balanced. Over time I’ve gotten better at trusting my intuition. While I’ve explored and studied a few different types of Feng Shui, the style I’m certified in is Interior Alignment, a kind of Instinctive Feng Shui. In this style, we utilize the Western style of Feng Shui and understand all the rules per se. However, we also learned to pair that with our instinctual abilities. Learning to get grounded daily through meditation and time in nature has been instrumental in my success. I am very fulfilled being able to do the work while listening to my inner voice.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
l used to think I had to meet all my clients in person. The traditional designer in me felt I had to be in the space to see it and almost prove my worth to the client. I was working with a few clients virtually, but mostly I was traveling to clients, often out of state. I would bundle clients in a location together and schedule short trips. However, like many of us, I had to pivot when we went through the Covid shutdown. When I had to cancel these visits, I was nervous about taking on more virtually. I knew I could do an excellent job, and my priority was ensuring clients felt the same attention they would receive in an in-person meeting. This work is powerful, and by using simple things like video calls, and requesting photos and videos, along with their floor-plan information, along with my in-depth intake form, I was able to provide them with just as valuable results, if not even better. I discovered during this time that while I love seeing my clients in person, being out of the actual space allowed me to dive in deeper and see spaces from a new perspective. I could grasp more and provide them with more information and suggestions by reviewing their home in the quiet of my office space. Today I now recommend and do nearly 90% of my work virtually.
