We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Meertins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I was just a teen from Queens with a love for hair. I began braiding my sisters hair at the age of 12, and braided hair in my neighborhood. My best friend was my biggest hair inspiration, and she taught me how to do weaves and hair color. I realized how much I enjoy expressing my creativity and style through doing hair. I continued to enhance my skills by teaching myself how to braid unique designs, that showed my innovative and artistic skills. I acquired my artistry skills from my Dad, a known artist in Georgetown, Guyana. He passed his creative skills to me and I express it through hair. With Dedication and Family support, I turned my talent into aspiration to be a unique hair stylist, turning Hair into Art.
As years passed, I took a break from hair and entered the medical field. After years of working a 9-5, I realized it wasn’t ideal because my mission was to have my own hair business.
As time went on I created a family and had three beautiful children. Due to Life’s struggles, I hit a place in life where the efforts became harder to face.
After visiting my Uncle & Aunt, they gave me the greatest opportunity to move to NC and get my life together.
I packed up, moved to NC and became a single mom of three with nothing but the determination to succeed. My dream of being a stylist was awaken when I started doing my childrens hair. The passion became more of a reality because my children admired my strength and I was their role model. So I had to follow my dream! They are my true inspiration to never give up.
My Family and Friends encouraged me to bring my hair talent to Charlotte and at that moment I created my vision of being a Boss. I knew little of entrepreneurship but I knew I had to begin somewhere.
I started a cleaning business first because I moved in the middle of Covid. Well let’s just say the cleaning competition was heavy and my focus was on hair. I began a more profound research, and out in the south the Loc community was the new hair trend. Considering I already had locs and loved my hair, I found it enjoyable to style Locs in the most creative ways. I had my vision and with the help of my buddies we came up with the name “On Point Locs”, It was perfect!
Due to Covid, I became the Traveling Loc Stylist, and from there my vision took off. I enjoyed traveling but also wanted my home salon studio.
Working part-time, a single mom of 3, and now running a hair business, I was hit with many challenges but I was determined to succeed.
With prayer, determination, and resilience I got my own apartment and built my home salon studio. I am now a successful hair business owner with a home salon and still have the leisure to be a traveling stylist.
My mission is to build confidence in the Loc community by using my creativity and bringing locs On Point.
The key to being successful in any business is patience, perseverance and dedication.
Don’t give up on ur dream.
If you do what you love, you will love what you do.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Starting any business you will need a platform to market yourself. Social media is the #1 way of making ur business known. I use Instagram and booksy to build my clientele. As business owners we have to keep up with the trend, and make it our own. To expand my audience, I post pictures of my work everyday on Instagram and I also make reels of my work with trending songs. Remember to engage with your followers and keep it professional.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Upon moving to NC I had a entrepreneur mindset. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I started a cleaning business during Covid, thinking that would be the best thing. I spent alot of money to equip me with cleaning gear and products. I got out there and was cleaning but after a few contracts I realized cleaning wasnt my thang. I really wanted to do hair! I finished my last contract and closed down On Point Cleaning! That very night I created a vision and began my journey of On Point Locs. Hair was my passion. Moral of story follow your heart.
