We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Maydwell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Friends and family often joke that I’m always traveling. Which is true. For me, traveling is essential to being a great writer and creative. When you step away from the comforts of home you are educated on how others live. You are exposed to different cultures, life experiences, and best of all different food choices. Visiting other cities, states, or countries helps you to realize that everybody doesn’t think like you. Some of my best screenplays come from my experiences while traveling to exotic locations..
Lisa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been a writer, it’s a gift passed down from my family. I often thought about being involved in filmmaking but I didn’t understand the process. I was introduced to someone in the business who gave me step-by-step instructions on producing a comedy series that I had been working on for years. With his encouragement I created my first episodic series Cooking with Munchies. A cooking show with a twist. It was picked up by Open Media in Denver. I wanted to perfect my skills so I attended a filmmaker’s camp in Lithuania. My script called Broken Branches was selected to be produced, and our team won the majority of the awards from the camp. Broken Branches went on to win numerous film festival awards from around the globe. Finally, I decided to leave the job I loved as an elementary school teacher and move to Atlanta to pursue my dream of being a filmmaker. It was a great decision and I haven’t looked back.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I moved to Atlanta it was at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. I retired from teaching to come to a different state to be put on lockdown. Instead of panicking, I begin writing screenplays for clients. This helped me survive. The lockdown gave me a chance to assess my career choices. Everyday I am grateful that I had the resilience to stick it out.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation in the film industry has been positive. I am known for being true to my word. I believe in helping others achieve their dreams and I connect like-minded individuals to make dreams happen. I am honest and loyal and I believe that what you give, you get back ten-fold.
