Lisa Marie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After retiring from my successful career as a Physical Therapist, I stumbled upon the world of quality bras while shopping for fabric for a Quilt Show. Little did I know that this encounter would change my life forever. I crossed paths with an amazing Utah bra lady who introduced me to the magic of properly fitting bras. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn on my journey in a new industry was the assumption that my corporate management skills would seamlessly translate into owning my own business. Having spent over three decades in leadership positions in healthcare, I believed that I could rely solely on my experience to excel in the world of direct sales. However, I soon realized that there were several crucial aspects I had overlooked.
Firstly, I lacked social media experience, which is an essential tool for success in today’s digital age. Additionally, my knowledge of marketing and branding was only moderate, and I had no established systems in place to grow my own business. While my background as a caregiver provided me with valuable customer experience and a foundation for success, I quickly understood that I needed to learn the intricacies of the business itself.
To overcome these challenges, I actively sought out partnerships with other women in business and enrolled in relevant classes to enhance my skill set. I also took inspiration from seasoned Bra Stylist sisters who had achieved tremendous success in their field. By emulating their strategies and learning from their wisdom, I gradually gained more confidence in navigating the ups and downs of running a unique and thriving business.
As a lifelong learner, I am genuinely excited about the progress I have made. I now feel more comfortable embracing both the significant milestones and the minor setbacks that come with growing and maintaining my own business. Through dedication and a willingness to adapt, I have discovered the joy of continually evolving and finding success in this new industry.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey as a Physical Therapist, has been one of resilience and growth. This is so true in transitioning to Direct Sales. While initially starting my business as a means to support my passion for quilting, I soon realized the potential it held to add value and educate customers in the how to fit themselves and know their correct band and cup size and even their Sister size. This realization fueled my determination to overcome obstacles and thrive in a constantly evolving industry. One of the greatest challenges I faced was my fear of social media. As I ventured into the world of online marketing, I stumbled through awkward posts and uncertain steps. However, I discovered that my genuine and endearing approach resonated with some customers. So, despite moments of sheer terror, I continued to push forward, posting online and facing my fears head-on.
Then, the pandemic struck, bringing with it a new set of challenges. Initially, I thought it was the end of my business, but instead of giving up, I decided to adapt. I reached out to my corporation and they assured me that although things had changed, there were opportunities to be found. I embraced the idea of virtual fittings and Zoom consultations, despite my initial apprehension.
Even while camping in a 23 ft trailer, I sat at kitchen table and conducted my first virtual fittings. It was a unique experience, but by the time my husband returned from his fly fishing day, I had already sold $1200 worth of bras and scheduled follow-up care visits over Zoom. This experience taught me that resilience means facing your fears every day, knowing that there will always be something to learn from each outcome.
As time went on, I continued to pivot and adapt, from one-on-one fittings to hosting virtual events and parties for larger groups. I embraced the uncertainty of outcomes and remained hopeful and positive. Through these experiences, I became an expert in my field, inspiring and teaching other women in business to embrace resilience
