We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa M. Lucero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa M. below.
Lisa M., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
As a child, I had an overly developed imagination. Oftentimes, I would find myself daydreaming about imaginary places, doing extraordinary things, and going on quests to faraway destinations while facing obstacles along the way. I always had a passion for reading. I also had the talent of storytelling and expressing my feelings through the written word. My teachers would often comment on my writing abilities and would encourage me to continue writing because of my talent.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was a journalist for a number of years working for several newspapers in Kansas and Texas, and doing freelance writing for the University of Houston-Victoria and Grinnell College. I have written five novels including Waves Crashing, The Death Firm, Night Shadow, and Deadly Beats. I am about to complete my sixth novel Killer Krewe, which is a thriller. I write mystery/suspense, science fiction, thrillers, and fantasy. Not only do I write, but I design my book covers as well. I also created my own website, which I update often. I keep my readers up-to-date with my book signings, upcoming novels, and other events through social media. I graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and attended Hutchinson Community College where I majored in journalism. Aside from writing novels, I work as an administrative assistant at Grinnell College in data and records.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think what makes writing rewarding for me is that I have a creative outlet to express my innermost feelings, political views, and beliefs in a way that isn’t too much into someone’s face. I am an introvert, so it is nice to communicate in a way that makes me feel most comfortable.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the journalism field, you often face criticism from the public. Criticism often makes you rethink your ability to write and drags you down. I often feel this way as I write novels, but I hear stories from other novelists who have been rejected for their work often and kept going. I block out those negative comments and remind myself that if I keep going my writing skills will improve and I will continue to grow as a writer.
