We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Luera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am so much happier as a business owner. Yes it has its ups and downs but so does a regular job. Being a business owner you can make your own hours, make your own rules, run your business how you want to. You make all the decisions on what’s best for you and your loved ones. I can rearrange my schedule when my kids are sick or when they are off from school or be available when they need to be picked up early or attend a field trip or event at their school or have lunch with my husband. The last time I had the though of having a regular job was just last week. The end of every month is very stressful for me. As a personal trainer, every month is different. Clients renew, some take a break during summer, go on vacations, their schedules change so every month my client lists can change. Getting a regular job comes to thought often, then everything works out and I just keep doing what I need to build my business. I collaborate with other business owners, I offer challenges, workshops, free workouts once a month. I am always trying ways to build and help out the community.
Lisa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2017, I joined a family owned gym to help me get back in shape after my last child. It literally changed my life.
In 2018 I decided to train for a bikini competition, I learned so much on how nutrition goes together with exercise, in the past I just thought exercise would keep me in shape. My trainer suggested that I get certified and I kept saying that I didn’t want to be a trainer I was happy with working on myself. It wasn’t until I started getting people asking me to help them get in shape and then during Covid that I had a change of heart. I got certified to be a health coach and then a personal trainer. I kept my regular job for about 1 or 2 years after and then I made the decision to go full time with my business in 2022. I took a risk and I have not regretted it since.
I am so passionate about helping others get their health back. It’s not only about the number on the scale it’s about helping people have a life again. Having energy and stamina to do daily activities, to be strong to live on their own, to go on vacations and be able to walk long distances. To have confidence in how they feel and look. To be healthy and heal their bodies from medical issues.
The clients a work with are the ones beginning on their health journey. They have never been to a gym, never worked out, never had a trainer, never used gym equipment. I enjoy educating them so they can know the proper techniques and which exercises and machines to use to get them to their goals. I also educate them on how important nutrition is and guide them to apply the changes to their lifestyle.
The most thing I am proud of is being an example to my girls. Showing them a healthy lifestyle, being a role model, showing them its possible to have your own business and be successful. I wouldn’t change that for anything.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being my true self. I don’t pretend to be like someone I am not. I’m honest and compassionate, I truly care about my clients. I connect with my clients not only on a professional level but a personal also. People want to know you care about them not they are a paycheck for you. I am still in contact with past clients and they still refer to me. I love building relationships.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals!! Word of mouth referrals have been 90% of my source for new clients. I market on social media, network and I am a part of a personal trainer directory.
