We recently connected with Lisa Knight and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Becoming the leader of this organization has been one of my greatest joys and accomplishments. There was a long time in my life growing up that I didn’t know who I was or where I was going. I had such a deep love for the arts and music, that I felt like it was all I had. I didn’t have much growing up, but what I did have was music and learning how to be a great performer, and utilizing those skills as an artist to create my other life. I have worked in Non-profit for over 20 years and now use those skills to help others find their voice. I love the opportunity to connect people to the things they need most and especially the ability to pour into the so they can see HOPE at the end of the tunnel.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been performing all of my life. I am now the Executive Director of the Girls Choral Academy. We are an organization that mentors young girls from 1st through 12th grade, using Choral music. we teach leadership skills, presentation skills, help cultivate trust and team building, as well as cognitive learning through music. This organization has been around for 26 years and has served over 3000 young ladies since its inception. They rehearse 1 day a week, and have a performance each semester. They also do outside performances to practice their stage presence and vocal technique.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to inspire and empower the next leaders. To allow these young leaders the ability to dream and think about who and what they can be in their future. To give them the tools and skillset to over obstacles and face any storm, with hope and a desire to conquer any situation that may hinder them.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That there is no one or thing that can stop you from being who you were created to be. The strength and power is within you to create the world you desire to live in. That you are unique and wonderful and have value in this world no matter your status in life.
