We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers

The craziest thing was when we made £1million in an hour! It was during covid and we just didn’t know if launching was going to work during that time so me and the team were really nervous. I had 3 of my team at my house during the masterclass in case I needed to cry afterwards if it failed! I did the masterclass and opened cart then did a 45 minute Q&A at the end. I had no idea if people were buying or not and was just answering the questions. Then my husband came in with a post it note just as I was answering the last question. It said “you just made £1m in this launch”. The shock on my face. People in that masterclass still remember that I nearly fainted!

Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

How I started out in business, like most entrepreneurs isn’t a linear story! I grew up with little money and a life expected to be average. I’ve taken a circuitous route including chicken farming, acting, TV presenting, being a PA, a high flying, but physically and mentally draining city job and gaining a law degree whilst working full time, kept but it never felt like I was on the right path. My life shifted dramatically when in 2011, my twin sons made their entry into the world. 5 months later, I was back at work, still in a job where I worked all the hours and rarely saw my kids.

At this point I knew I had to stop and re-assess. Something had to change or I would be sacrificing either (a) my relationship with my young family, (b) my health, (c) my sanity, (d) my successful career.

This resulted in the birth of my first business – a wedding planning company, but I soon realised I knew nothing about running a business and expensive mistakes were commonplace while couples wanting to make use of my wedding planning skills were thin on the ground. I found a business coach, studied and learned and my business went from no clients to fully booked with perfect clients in 5 months while charging more. I had a knack for helping businesses make money without making it complex and full of jargon.

Today I turnover multi-seven figures annually and am the only UK based online strategist to consistently see multi-seven figure launches, including a £2m launch in the middle of a pandemic.

In my first year of business, I worked about 80 hours a week. I now works on average 30 hours a month. And am proud of the fact that I didn’t spend a penny on ads or employ a team member until I’d made my first million.

I’m proud that we have bought in £20million in sales but always with integrity. There have been so many times to do things unethically and where mentors have just told me to do it because it will make me a lot of money and I haven’t. I decided to stick to doing things in the right way and I’m proud of that.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?

I think I’d have to refer back to the launch that we did smack bang in the middle of the pandemic. It was definitely a sale where the odds were stacked against us – the general mood in the country was understandably doom and gloom, and the general line was no one was spending any money! But we saw this as an opportunity with so many people on furlough, and unsure of their job security moving forward.

Simply the amount of times I bounce back after being trolled online. During my last launch it was particularly bad and every time a part of me wants to quit and hide but a stronger part has become so resilient and I always think to myself – this will be something I can help others with later, and it pushes me on.
