We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Hall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa below.
Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
The greatest advice I can share with a visionary would be “start your dream today!” Waiting only pushes things further into the future. So, to answer the question, yes, I would have absolutely launched my company sooner than I did. I worked in corporate America for over two decades, grinding it out for the shareholders. Those long travel hours and board room-style meetings were all-consuming. Creating power points and preparing our cross-functional teams for those gold standard customer meetings did provide a great foundation. That time invested in my career laid the groundwork for staring my own business. And after 20 years, I was more than ready to move on! Make no mistake, owning your own business is time consuming, too. However, the greatest part is directly benefiting from the hard work. My company launched in 2018. Ideally, I would have started 5 years prior. It takes about 5 years to fully develop a brand and sales. The freedom of owning your own company, setting your own company culture is priceless! The first thing I did was ditch the stuffy business attire! So, go for it! Chase that dream and make it happen!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business as a natural alternative to the chemically-based skincare products in retail. I personally have very sensitive skin, so I dreamed of something pure and truly chemical free. Unfortunately, there are preservatives, such as sodium benzoate in many so called “natural” products currently on the shelf. In my career, I worked on collaborating with some of the top foodservice chefs in the US creating signature and proprietary food recipes. During this tenure, I learned that food is synergist and the best recipes are simple. Simple recipes are more difficult to create because you cannot hide “mistakes” in a sea of ingredients. I quickly learned that skincare is the same way. So, my mission was simple: create skincare products from scratch using pure, organic and food grade ingredients. One of my top selling products, Elixirious face & eye serum, came to me while reflecting on my experiences at the Campbell Soup Company. I launched this product in 2018, and to-date, it continues to grow exponentially in sales. Customers truly appreciate the quality of ingredients combined with visible results. I have to say, it was a German Chef from a restaurant chain based in Santa Barbara who was the inspiration! This concept, of creating skincare with food grade ingredients with an emphasis on mineral wellness, caught the eye of Kathy Ireland’s team. They reached out to us in 2019 and featured our story on the Women’s Network TV nationally and the Bloomberg International Report, globally. At this point, I knew my vision was real. It had come-to-life watching the Kathy Ireland show air for the first time! We have since expanded this concept into wellness teas and I am even adding a NEW, very exciting product this fall. Stay tuned!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Happy customers are the best way to sustainably grow your business. Those repeat sales, combined with word of mouth sales lead to exponential growth. However, it does take time. I would share that a healthy business takes about 5 years to fully develop. The key strategies behind growth are products that do-what-they-say and satisfied customers with real-life testimonies! Customers love to share about their newest finds that make a difference in their lives. Customer loyalty is the most rewarding part of owning a business.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My mom helped me start my business. She has been an incredible source of inspiration, encouragement and strength. She has sampled my formulas and provided honest feedback. The key is bringing in people close to you that you can fully trust. People who have been with you through the ages, I believe, are the best business partners.
