We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Gray recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa , appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Hmmm. It was during Covid I had finally decided to take the leap and start my own agency. I have been in marketing in some capacity for well over 15 years. During the time of Covid, I was a commission paid employee and had lost a great portion of my income. So I started LEGS Media and it took off. Not to say there hasn’t been times of difficulty and struggle because there has. Even with that being said, I showed great growth, and a very quick timeframe . I wish I would have taken the leap of faith much sooner and believed in myself.
Lisa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Media for me didn’t come naturally. I started out of necessity. I was part owner in an online magazine, and had to get sells and revenue. So in order to succeed, I had to start selling . I had to learn quickly and be efficient and then we lost our designer so then I had to put myself back through school to learn web design programs and layouts. From there my career took off. I was given a job offer to work at large news stations. I found in my craft, all the while I was a single mom..
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
So not long after the magazine had started, we’re about a year into it, and I had to actually find a job. I lost my designer I lost my rider and then there was just me. So I took my skills and knowledge and started working for a company which gave me great experience and from there I went from 10 other companies. Fell in love with photography along the way and end up doing quite a bit of photography work. And that has been a primary focus even with LEGs media. I pivoted from ad space to now booking bands doing photography as well as still running Google campaigns, building out websites and enjoying all the learning and activities that come with it..
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think the fact that I have been working in marketing for so many years really contributed to my reputation. Without that background without those connections, I don’t think I would’ve ever made it. Also being a part of a BNI group building those relationships and connections has also been pivotal in my business.
