Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Gornall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my career – because it took me a couple times to get it – overworking hurts me.
I’ve overworked twice in my career to my literal breaking point where I was forced out on leave for 6-8 weeks.
The first time was when I was in college.
I was working 3 part time jobs and going to college. It was the first semester of my freshman year. I was pushing myself to work to pay my bills and so I could travel to Europe in the summer with my sister. I would fall asleep anywhere I was for a short period of time. I just look back and remember being tired but I kept pushing through…until I couldn’t.
A month into my first semester of school I got sick and was put on bedrest for weeks. It was awful because not only was it boring but I couldn’t work which meant I wasn’t bringing in money to pay my bills. I couldn’t go to class for 2 weeks and work longer. I went back to the higher paying and less physically demanding jobs first and let go of the lesser paying, physically demanding jobs.
Unfortunately, I didn’t learn anything this time except to work at jobs that required more from me mentally than physically. I overworked, volunteered excessively and put my family’s needs above my own.
Six years ago, I tore my achilles tendon. The cure – resting it. Here I was again but this time, I had a husband, 2 kids at home to care for and multiple businesses between my husband and myself. I was also working out of the home offering my services at local 5 star spas.
Everything came to a halt. I was able to continue working with my clients but that was it. It was frustrating, I was bitter and I didn’t want to do this ever again.
It was at this point that I finally realized I had to take care of me. Self-care was the only way I can recharge. Overworking was my pattern and that had to change and it did. It kept me running on empty. I realized I was proving my worth and that I was enough through my work and volunteering. From here I started to create my Success Wound™ training, programs and offers to support other high performers that also struggle with overworking. Overworking is not sustainable in any humanly way.
Self-care is a part of my day everyday. I also create boundaries around my work hours and with my clients so I don’t overwork anymore.
Once in awhile, if a literal emergency comes up and I end up overworking, I compensate that by blocking off days to recharge.
Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Spiritual Medium. I was born with my intuitive abilities with energy.
I have the ability to feel your energy in my body. I see, feel and know how you store energy. I intuitive know why you store energy in certain areas, how to let it go when it no longer serves you and how to refill with positive energy. I am psychic, can see spirits, do past life readings, and use all of this to help my clients get on their best path while feeling balanced and successful.
While I have systems in every program that address your time, relationships, mindset and energy, nothing I do is cookie cutter. I intuitively address where you’re at and help you get where you want to go with my abilities.
I’m most of proud of my ability to help high performers get to the root of their Success Wound so that they can create sustainable success and work-life balance. This is what separates me out from other consultants out there that are all doing the SAME things.
I work with high performers individually and as teams in my programs:
I Can Have it ALL™ – semi-private for individuals
Love Your Life Accelerator™ – private for individuals
The Successful High Performer™ – for teams
Success Wound™ – inner work training to get to the root of why high performers overwork for teams, groups, programs and individuals
My work is here to help high performers have sustainable success and work-life balance. Burnout and stress leave are completely preventable.
The best way to support high performers is by working with their teams. But when that’s not possible, I have individual options to help them feel supported so they can make the changes that keep them working sustainably.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Stop taking what your team says at face value. Pay attention to how they look (tired, overwhelmed, happy, etc.), what they’re really saying and listen to how their life is outside of work.
These are all important clues into how your team is really doing. Often you don’t know someone is stressed until they’re out sick or leaving until they put in their resignation.
High performers will over perform. If you give them more to do, they’ll do it and they’ll overwork to get it done. Doing generic check ins or online classes where they keep hitting next will not help your team thrive. It’ll make your team miserable and bitter because they have something pointless to do when they’re so busy.
Really check in with your team. Watch their nonverbal responses as well as their verbal responses.
And my biggest tip: don’t reach out to anyone for work stuff outside of work hours.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the three biggest things that have helped me build my reputation are my abilites, I’m empathetic and I get my clients amazing results.
I have a reputation for being honest, digging deep and getting to the root of the problem.
