Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Goodwin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My dream job was to create content from home on my own time—content that is helpful to other people and makes their lives easier or better. Being an introvert, working from home is ideal for me. Also, having a flexible work schedule is necessary for a mother of two small children. However, this always sounded too good to be true. But I really wanted this so bad and read online that many have achieved this. So I took the risk and started a business (website) online. The risk initially was that I had to produce a lot of content for free before I could even think about monetizing. I really did not want to waste my time either. After a few months, I made a few cents a day. But after 6 months, I make a couple of hundred a month, and it kept growing. The risk in this job is that with algorithm updates, new technology, and new trends, you never know if your small business will survive or not. However, I have been doing this since 2016, and no matter what update hit my business, I always found a way back out. The key is to stay consistent and keep at it. Learning new technology and trends is also important.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I went to college in Germany to become a teacher (sports education). However, when we moved to the USA, I never translated my degree, and I also wanted to be home more with my kids. I started my blog with lifestyle articles, aiming to share things I had learned to help other people make their lives easier.
Over time, I realized that I was drawn to recipes and the fitness niche. After trying to eat healthier, lose some extra baby weight, and improve my health, I continued to research nutrition on my own. Eventually, my family and I made the change to follow a vegan diet. I then pursued certifications in nutrition and vegan nutrition and completely revamped my website. I also wrote a book called Plant Powered Health to help people get started eating more plants.
After a while, I also maintained an interest in fitness and decided to earn my personal trainer license and weight loss specialist certificate from NASM.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I published my book in March 2020. I had great sales and a lot of interest. My book was ranking #1 in Kindle books for health. However, in the same month, the pandemic hit and my sales completely crashed. And so did other income streams through my website. It was hard to watch everything you have built up over the years just crumble down. However, having our second baby, I decided to take a break and let everything just sit, focus on family. After the break, things have recovered and I started back up. I made a plan, stuck to it, and saw a return very quickly. I think the biggest tip in this kind of work is to stay consistent to see results and don’t give up when things don’t look so good.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing that has repeatedly consumed my time and money was listening to work-from-home influencers who claim to make 10k-100k a month and sell their products with strategies that promise to teach you how to achieve similar success.
They really hook you in, making you believe they possess knowledge you don’t. And sometimes, trying a new strategy or learning new things is necessary to grow your business. But, for the most part, I wasted my money on these products. I knew what worked for my business, yet instead of focusing on that and expanding it, I tried all these different strategies from other business owners in the hopes of “making thousands of dollars on autopilot.” It only ended up wasting my time.
Now, I focus on what truly works for my business, and it seems easier to run, building a foundation for long-term success.
