Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Gilbert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am 10 years into my comedy career, and meaningful comedy events are what I am focusing on now. My favorite type of events are fundraisers for mine and other communities. I also love churches and womans events. I enjoy events where I get to share a bit about myself and motivate others.

Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born a twin separated and then separated from my twin at birth; after 4 years in foster care. I was adopted separately from my twin. What’s important about that with regards to my comedy, is that I always used humor to deflect the feelings of never fitting in. Once I became an adult, I changed that narrative, and choose to make people laugh because it’s my talent; my gift if you will. I love to motivate people. I love to see and hear laughter from the crowd; for that 90 minutes people are happy and that makes me happy too.
San Diego, CA has a great comedy scene with incredibly talented comics, they are who I learn from. I’ve taken the time to learn comedy from the stage to the business side even producing shows. I’ve also gleaned a good deal of information on writing styles, how to inquire about a perspective show, joke structure and stage presence.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
At 50, I decided that it was time to quit my full-time job as a Social Worker after 25 years. My kids were 8 and I become a stay home mom for the first time. I needed to be home more with my triplets during the day, Prior to retiring, I would take my kids to school and then not see them until the morning; it was not good for any of us. I gave up the security of a guaranteed paycheck and health care to be with my kids more and still pursue my dreams.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I feel like my life up until the time I hit the stage was all about resilience. I was given up at birth; me and my twin sister. We were put in foster care separately. We lived our lives away from each other. After 4 years in foster care I was adopted but a single white mother. As a little black/white kid, I grew up around people that did not look like me, I felt out of place most of my childhood through my early 20’s. Laughter was a way to hide those feelings, a distraction. When I hit that stage for the first time, I was ready to be me. Lisa Gilbert, no hiding just me putting myself out there for the world to see.
