We recently connected with Lisa Foster and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa , thanks for joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
The journey to opening my private practice has been an incredible experience, one that truly highlights the importance of saying “yes” to opportunities as they arise. After dedicating over 20 years of my career to being a traditional Physical Therapist in a clinic setting, I never imagined I would take the plunge into entrepreneurship. However, everything changed one day when I had the opportunity to help a co-worker alleviate her concussion symptoms using a gentle technique called Craniosacral Therapy. The relief she experienced was so profound that she encouraged me to treat her privately, and I took that chance, saying yes to her request opened the door to a new path.
What started as informal sessions in my home quickly gained momentum. Each person I helped gave me the courage to pursue my passion further. When a colleague offered me the chance to rent a room in his clinic, I recognized it as another opportunity and eagerly accepted. Moving into an office not only expanded my reach but also opened doors I hadn’t even considered. As my practice flourished through word of mouth and connections with other practitioners, I found myself balancing part-time work at a pediatric clinic with my growing private practice.
Eventually, I came to a realization: I loved working as a private practitioner and wanted to pursue it full-time. Just as I was contemplating this shift, an unexpected opportunity arose: the pediatric clinic I had worked for was closing. This moment felt like a clear sign inviting me to fully embrace my passion. With excitement and determination, I said yes to this new chapter and stepped confidently into my full-time private practice. This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of seizing opportunities, and I’m thrilled to see where this path will continue to lead!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner of Mapleton Craniosacral Therapy, located in Louisville, Colorado. I specialize in CranioSacral Therapy (CST), a light-touch, hands-on approach that supports the central nervous system. At Mapleton Craniosacral Therapy, I offer individualized care for clients of all ages, from newborns to older adults. My areas of focus include headaches and migraines, TMJ dysfunction, stress and anxiety, post-concussion support, pediatric issues such as latch or sleep difficulties, and overall wellness.
What I love about Craniosacral Therapy is that it treats the whole client. It releases not only the structural tension within the body but also any emotional tension that blocks the body’s ability to heal. This gentle approach allows clients to heal, rest, and recharge, creating a profound sense of balance and well-being. Each session is tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual, fostering a supportive environment for healing and rejuvenation.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I approach each client as a unique individual, focusing on who they are beyond just their symptoms or diagnosis. When someone enters my office, my main goal is to listen and understand their journey. I believe that healing is a collaborative process, with both the client and therapist playing essential roles.
Our bodies possess an inherent capacity to heal. When we get a small cut, our bodies know exactly what to do, and usually, in just a day or two, it’s healed up nicely. But when we face bigger challenges, our bodies sometimes need a little extra help, kind of like how stitches can support a big wound. Once we provide that support, healing becomes much easier.
As a therapist, I have the experience and tools to offer this support, but it’s the client who ultimately holds the power to make use of it and heal. It truly is a partnership, and each client is a vital member of this healing team.
Regarding my reputation in the market, I believe that my success stems from treating clients as individuals and fostering genuine connections with them. This personalized approach, combined with my commitment to empowering clients in their healing processes, has helped me establish trust and respect within my community. Seeing clients thrive is what truly matters, and I believe that’s what keeps people coming back and spreading the word!

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Looking back, I can confidently say that I would choose my current profession again without hesitation. There’s something truly special about going to work and feeling a sense of joy, fulfillment, and energy that resonates with my core values. I genuinely enjoy my work; every day feels like an opportunity to engage in something meaningful.
The inviting atmosphere in my office, the diverse clients I have the pleasure of working with, and the rewarding manual therapy techniques I get to practice all contribute to my satisfaction. It’s a privilege to be part of this field.
That said, reaching this point wasn’t an easy journey. It required a significant amount of hard work, commitment, and introspection to pinpoint what truly reflects my passion and what I need for a fulfilling career. The search for this kind of alignment can be a process, sometimes needing multiple tries, but when you find it, it becomes clear that it’s exactly where you’re meant to be.
