We recently connected with Lisa Doll and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
From a young age, I’ve always felt a strong pull towards creativity and self-expression. As a child, I vividly remember losing myself in the world of imagination and art, constantly sketching and dreaming up fantastical scenes. Drawing on my dolls and cutting their hair. This love for creating and expressing myself only grew stronger as I matured. I realized that I didn’t want to confine myself to a single artistic outlet; I wanted to explore various avenues to fully embrace my multidisciplinary nature. This passion led me to become a tattoo artist, where I can blend my whimsical fantasy-based art style with a remarkable client experience. Over the years, my artistic journey expanded to include writing music and performing in a touring band, photography, and now AI-based visual concepts. The desire to be successful for my creativity has been a driving force since those early years, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to live out this dream every day.
Lisa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a professional artist that has made a career in tattooing and permanent makeup. My artistic journey has seen me evolve into an award-winning tattoo artist, designer, studio owner, and educator. My style is characterized by its whimsical essence, pastel color palettes, fantastical subjects, and ornate opulence.
My venture into tattooing began back in 2011, and my determination to succeed led me to open my own studio in 2014. I was originally unable to secure a traditional apprenticeship, so I charted my own course by attending a formal school and learning from colleagues and various educational outlets. This unconventional path allowed me to offer both permanent makeup and artistic tattoos, catering to a diverse range of clients and being more in-tuned to their needs and wants as a consumer.
What differentiates me is my focus on the client experience and what they want from tattooing. My mission revolves around problem-solving, be it by enhancing self-esteem, aiding in healing journeys, or offering a creative escape from life’s stresses. I approach every client with empathy, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction throughout the process and making sure their permanent tattoo is a positive addition to their image.
Among my proudest achievements is my ability to contribute positively to the tattoo industry. Since 2012, I’ve nurtured my own studio, Rose Red Tattoo in Ellicott City, MD, serving as a beacon of the future of the field. Beyond my artistry, I’ve taken on the role of mentor, creating a structured learning environment that breaks away from the toxic norms of traditional tattoo apprenticeships and has allowed artists who may not have had a chance to enter the industry to have fruitful and successful careers.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Over the years I have struggled with being a multidisciplinary artist, and mostly focused on specializing in tattooing with my social media and other marketing. But after 12 years of doing so, I feel more of a call to transcend labels and explore creative boundaries. The struggle to navigate marketing and social media as an artist who defies categorization is real. I’m on a mission to be recognized as a creator across diverse mediums, rejecting the confines imposed by conventional expectations. My journey involves embracing various avenues of expression, because at my core, I am a CREATOR. Whether it’s tattooing, music, illustration, or any other medium, I find my purpose in creating with the intent that it will resonant with others, the medium I chose to do so with isn’t the main focus of my creative identity.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Honestly, my view on NFTS are that if people will buy them, you should sell them. If there is a demand, then supply it. Simple as that.
