We recently connected with Lisa D. Adams and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lisa D. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Help Me Help My Son the Ongoing Conversation television show is the most meaningful project that I have been blessed to work on. It is a sequel to Help Me Help My Son the documentary which debut March 8, 2020. The shift came when a concern parent visited my table during a vending event seeking a book for her African American son. Although, I had books that pertained to both the young ladies and young men it made her upset. She was upset because her desire was to purchase something to tailor made for young African American men only and I did not have that to offer.
Following the conversation with that mom I made a commitment to do my part. This entailed searching for books, speaking with family and friends regarding their concerns with their sons. It also required speaking with young men to understand their thoughts and beliefs. Soon thereafter Help Me Help My Son the documentary was filmed.
The documentary consisted of 7 young men and their parents, community leaders, teachers, pastors, and mentors. Shortly following the premiere the cast was faced to deal with various circumstances. One of the young men’s brother was killed, a mom was diagnosed with cancer, another cast member experienced severe depression. Besides praying, I asked God what it was that he wanted me to do. I was then presented to opportunity to host my own talk show Help Me Help My Son the Ongoing Conversation. My motto is to ask questions, seek answers and provide solutions.
This platform has allowed me to dig deeper in the minds of everyone involved with the expectation of visualizing life through their eyes. I have had candid conversation with parents who have frequent meltdowns because they do not know what to do. Those same conversations have been had with young men who state we are in different times so the reaction to events require them to act according. Most heartbreaking conversation is to hear that some of the young men do not expect to live to age 25.
My prayer is that they live beyond age 25. I will continue to do my part by creating films such as My House My Rules… Not Up In Here to bring awareness and to make a difference.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was taught at a young age how to become unstoppable and how to go after those things you wanted. This was taught to me by my mom, Wilma Adams Diggs who was a single parent. She went over and beyond to make sure not only our needs were met but also our wants. She also had a strong support system from grandparents on both her and my dad’s side of the family. She was a preacher’s kid which required us to be at church all of the time. That’s another story for another time.
Nevertheless as I got older I made some questionable decisions which caused major depression. It began in my early twenties. What I found myself doing was looking for love in the wrong places from the wrong persons and it caused a feeling of devalue, Life was not worth living during that period of time and I had given up on the desire to live. I did not understand the meaning of loving myself and self-esteem.
In a picture perfect world I would say my story changed by the time I was in my 30’s but that is not true. I was still going through some situations that were not healthy for my life. I have no one to blame other than myself. Yes, I take ownership of my role in my life.
Believe it or not it took for me to endure all those hiccups in life to get to where I am today. Londyn and the Angel Called Uncle Johnny made me an award winning author. I recently became a best seller with my chapter in Believe In Your Dreams with Nichole Peters, Les Brown and so many other outstanding authors. I am an actress in the movie and series called Seasoned by Aretha Tatum. Last and but not least, I am writing and creating platforms for our youth to be heard.
Their need to understand their value is important. Knowing who they are and what they are capable of will help alleviate depression. It will cause them to push for life knowing that it is worth living.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am driven by the local news who only displays chaos and randomly finds the good to share. I am passionate about this journey because I have 2 sons and a grandson that I want to know that I am rooting for them. That does not dismiss my daughter who I am also cheering for. I’m cheering for those parents who have done everything they have known to do but their child has gone against the grain.
It is time out for the feel good conversations. We have to speak a language in which would register with our youth so that they can understand. There are consequences for our actions.
This is not a journey chosen by me. I was chosen by God to take on this task.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I am a witness God will connect you with those needed to fulfil his mission. Your job is to be obedient and to move as instructed to do so which is exactly what I did. I took huge leaps of faith.
Aretha Tatum has been and still is a great inspiration to me. We met in the APS owned by Toneal Jackson another great inspiration. Aretha and I hit off as soon as we met. She is one that believes in the power of prayer and God will make a way when there seems to be no other way.
Often times we had conversations about what we were presently doing and the desires of our hearts. One of my desires during that time was to leave my place of employment. It was her encouragement that kept me going. She was and still is one that keeps me accountable with the question “What’s next?”. Aretha Tatum also introduced me to acting. I filled in as a background actor and now I have speaking roles. Not to mention I write my own scripts as well.
Prior to becoming a author, I was an avid reader. While strolling through the mall, I noticed a new bookstore and decided to go in an look around. I met Mary Jackson which was Toneal’s assistant. She and I became acquaintances. Somedays, I would just go to the store and pray. I had a great feeling about that place and told myself my book Just Who I Am was going to be in that store.
While strolling through one Sunday afternoon, I saw a new face in the store and said to myself “this must be the owner because I have never seen her before”. I went in and introduced myself. Toneal Jackson the own of APS, has been influential in her teaching me the aspects of being a book author. Prior to meeting her I did not know the opportunities that lied ahead for me. Because of her I now publish books, have been able to attend various expos as a group and on my own.
Now let’s talk about Freddie B. Robinson, we met on set. Freddie, Aretha and I were all background actors for a movie called My Online Valentine. The producers had me sitting in a space with instructions not to move. That was my first time being on set and I did not know to bring snacks or anything with me but I was thirsty. Freddie was walking by and I told him the instructions I had been given then asked if he could give me a bottle of water.
Freddie has been a true ride or die with my business. When I reached out to him per the request of Aretha to provide guidance for the documentary he showed up in a mighty way. Since then he has been involved in almost everything I do. He is one that keeps me on my toes and accountable.
I am so blessed to have each of them in my life. We are all doing phenomenal things.
