We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Carman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lisa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
My business story STARTS with crazy. Me that is. I thought I was destined to be a Vice President of Training and spent 17 years at a large corporation, feeling out of place and uncertain. Isn’t a VP role what every ambitious professional should be striving towards? So, I bucked the system, tried to fit in as a round peg in a very square hole, and felt defeated. And I tried. And tried.
Then I met some women leaders who helped me find my niche. These ladies figured out I liked to write Resumes and started sending me their executive-level friends and colleagues. Then those execs starting sending me their colleagues for Resume writing help. In short order, I was writing so many Resumes that I didn’t have time for my “career”. I was ready to put a stop to the Resume writing, after all, THAT’S not a true career direction.
Then I realized something I didn’t expect. The 1-on-1 connection with my Resume clients and the writing itself was my favorite thing. Still, I thought I should follow in ‘corporate footsteps’ and pursue a VP role to truly be successful. It seemed I had forgotten that old definition of ‘crazy’ – expecting different results while doing the same thing over and over.
Seeing my struggle, my husband asked, “If you were truly free to choose your career path, what would you do?”. I found myself answering, “The Resume writing work for sure.” And that decided it – My engineer-brain hubby had to help me see beyond my own idea of success in business.
I finally got out of my own way, embraced my destiny and opened my Resonating Resumes business in 2010. And haven’t looked back since. Today I run a successful business writing customized Resumes and LinkedIn Profiles for corporate leaders – and I LOVE IT!
Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Job search is stressful. Being unprepared for Job search increases the stress exponentially. The best thing you can do for yourself to prepare for Job search is to get that Resume updated and build your LinkedIn Brand. And that’s where I, the Resume Guru, come in.
Writing your own Resume and LinkedIn Profile is hard. In fact, many professionals avoid doing it until they have an unexpected job opportunity and they’re in a panic to write it, which does NOT make it easier! I’m here to guide you through my proprietary process, write that Resume and establish your online, professional brand in LinkedIn.
Added BONUS: You will feel more motivated and ready for job search. This is a natural outcome of my personalized process.
My favorite part is the 1-on-1 work with high-powered, impressive client leaders. I can’t wait to hear about your amazing accomplishments and impact in business and then translate that onto a Resume document or in a LinkedIn Profile. This is fun for me.
I have a gift for connecting quickly and deeply with people and can develop a completely customized Resume or LinkedIn Profile that not only WOW’s you, but also gets you the job interview. Are you ready to succeed in career search? I’m ready when you are.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Using LinkedIn as my marketing platform was key to establishing a solid reputation in my industry. And the key to using LinkedIn to market your business is consistency. Sharing relevant, interesting posts that matter to my connections and sharing on a regular basis. This has helped me reach the Top 10 in searches for “Resume Writer”
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
As with most business, my best source of new clients ARE my clients. It took time, years even, but I now have such a large base of past happy clients, that I receive referrals all the time. Between client referrals and new clients via LinkedIn and my website, I am more than full-time busy. A fantastic problem to have as a business owner!
