We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
When I was a young teen, I was raped and had my daughter at the age of 14. My mother gave up custody to the state. I had a very hard upbringing. I know how it feels to feel unsupported in life, yet have to continue to move forward with your dreams. I worked three jobs, with two children and continued to push myself through college.
Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The primary theme that drives my art practice is celebrating healing within the black diasporic. Providing sanctuary space for black women to feel emotionally acknowledged in visual arts and through photography have a place/space to heal. Showing extremes of mental health in physical conditions that coincide with the environment. I engage in global art with the intent of bringing to the forefront brown and black humans that are often under-celebrated in the art world. Currently, I showcase at galleries and museums. Speaking with the public about space to heal and living an extreme diaspora life.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Creative grants that every city and state allocates funds for. Going to public installations to relationships with private businesses. Supporting the artist community is just as important as the trash department.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had become unable to perform my job duties as a vet tech, due to a car hitting me. I didn’t panic, but I did pick up my camera. I said a prayer to lead me. I am thankful for my passion and dreams.
