We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa Brat Martinez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa Brat below.
Lisa Brat, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Growing up I always stood apart from everyone else. I was born into a family that has been in the entertainment industry for generations. I wasn’t the typical little girl who played with dolls or dreamt of fairy tales. I was a rough little girl, climbing trees, playing with farm animals, and hot wheels. A tomboy with sparkles best describes me, still to this day. During my adolescent years, I unfortunately experienced things in life that no child should. That’s when I began wanting to desperately escape my world and fight for a better life. A sweet uncle of mine, mentioned I should “try” acting, I gave it a shot and found it to be exactly what I needed. I could bring life to a character and earn a living as well. Ever since then, I’ve portrayed a variety of roles, and do my own stunts and enjoy every moment of it, Although I have famous family members, I prefer to accomplish my goals with hard work, determination and on my own. I want to be known for who I am, not who I’m related to, because I have endured obstacles during the process but I never bowed down. I keep my head up, talents polished and follow God’s lead in life.
Lisa Brat, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
During the years, I could be found behind the scenes, handling the business aspects in the entertainment industry. But for some reason my choice of attire was always a topic. My go to outfit is tank top, cut off denim shorts, and combat boots. It wasn’t a fad, it’s just what I feel comfy in. My attire seemed outlandish to some but always perfect for me. Thrift shops are my weakness, I’d purchase items, take them home and add my flair to them and that’s how my clothing line became a reality. Acting has enabled me to use my platform and wear my own designs to premieres and events which makes my heart smile with pride. One thing that I firmly believe in is giving back to humanity and animals. I’m heavily involved in fighting against human trafficking and being the voice for others. My biggest challenge has been to ensure wrongful convictions get overturned. In doing so, I met Pablo Velez Jr., my gentleman, who has fulfilled my soul. My children are my greatest accomplishment and true miracles. My parents are the icing on my cupcake of life. Although I’m away at times, filming in various locations, I can always depend on my family to keep me grounded because when I’m home, I’m just mom. To the world I’m known as Brat, but I can truly say, I worked hard for everything I have and for who I am, most of all, I did it my way. My advice would be, never lose yourself to anyone or anything. Stay true to you and just live.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One thing I have realized about social media is, it’s best to be you. Be proud of who you are, your heritage and culture. I have had my ups and downs in life, I am not ashamed nor embarrassed to share them. I see myself the same as everyone else. My life in the public eye is the only difference. I’m open and honest about my life, I have shared the crazy times and the sad. There’s been many times when I was advised to be cautious with what I share because some might not understand or find it offensive. I choose to be me, I keep it classy, and respectful but I also speak my truth. So to those who have continued to stand by me, I appreciate you. We should never pretend to be someone we’re not, that’s a role, I could never play.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Screenwriters and Directors work extremely hard when writing and developing films, the team behind the cameras are what enhances the story. For every role I portray I do research on it, to ensure I am familiar with the character, then I get in my zone and let the magic happen by bringing that character to life. I enjoy portraying a variety of characters, everything from the good to the bad and in between. It’s therapeutic for me in the sense of escaping my reality and giving life to the character on screen. I was on my own since I was 16 so I’m able to use my experiences in life in the roles I’ve played. A negative can be a positive if used correctly.
