Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa B. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I created Virgo Designs & Landscaping 10 years ago. I wanted to put my name on it but wasn’t loving it as a name for a landscaping company. I am a Virgo, an Earth sign. Loud & proud by the way! Virgos are historically represented by the goddess of wheat & agriculture. Virgos are picky, detail oriented and typically perfectionists that have a very systematic approach to everything. The word “Virgo” has a deeper meanng and I thought it would be a perfect name. All that being said, Virgo Designs & Landscaping was born.
Lisa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Lisa B., a landscaper for all of greater Los Angeles. I’m a mom of three girls, born and raised in California, a virgo and the owner and designer for Virgo Designs and Landscaping. VD&L builds the gardens of peoples’ dreams. We transform all outdoor spaces of all sizes. After I remodeled my own house I learned I had a knack for it. As a designer in the fashion business previously, my skills for design and color coordination transferred over to my passion for gardens. After they had seen my house, someone asked me to redo their garden and I agreed. I learned that I loved it and that I was able to make beautiful spaces like no one else could and started my business. VD&L prides ourselves on attention to detail and tailoring projects to each client’s needs and budget, and our focus on planting for longevity. We also keep the environment in mind while planting, making sure to be water and waste conscious while keeping the pollinators happy.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I helped build my credibility and reputation as a landscaper by doing exactly what I promised or more. I stick to the price of the bid and try to be on time. I pay attention to the details and focus on providing people with the little things that matter like leaving a clean workspace, having a polite crew, treating peoples’ properties with respect and being very mindful of each individual client’s schedule. I try to create an experience for each of my clients that leaves them with not only less stress but a beautiful garden.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I was competing for a big project in the beginning of my career. I was going up against six other well established landscapers and designers and I knew that a lot was riding on this one project. If I could land this, a lot of work on a larger scale would follow. I showed up well prepared. I had planned what I was going to do and I presented the design that I had worked very hard on and had full confidence in. I was trying my hardest to say the perfect things to make them choose me out of all of the competition, who were all men. After the initial meet I gently followed up while trying not to annoy them. The developers in charge of the project were entirely impossible to read. I couldn’t tell what they were thinking so I was unsure about how my approach had landed. This was a make it or break it moment and this job would put me on the map. When I learned I got the job, I was thrilled! They kicked my ass on price and I knew it would be though but it would be worth it. I was nervous because it was one of my first big jobs and it would influence the future of my career. I knew that everything had to be perfect but that it meant I was in the major leagues now. The house sold quickly because of the work I did and still looks beautiful driving past it to this day. We went on to work on five more houses on that street because of the first house and worked there for two more years. The project was tough but it paid off.
