We recently connected with Lisa Agens and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, appreciate you joining us today. Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
When I started Your Lean Life LLC in 2018, the intention was a 1:1 nutritional coaching business where I travel to clients. Busy professionals and parents don’t always have time to step away from their daily obligations to go to a meeting or location. That worked well until Covid started. In order to service my existing clients, we all had to learn Virtual Meetings. We found it actually worked even better! I was able to share information and teaching, via screen shares, more effectively. I was able to service more people in the day, due to less travel, and have more flexible hours. After the Covid restrictions were lifted, the Virtual aspect stuck around not only for scheduling, but clients were not committed to a specific location anymore. If they traveled, or had errands to do, they could still commit to our meetings and stay focused on their goals. So the business model is now completely virtual and nationwide as location is not an issue!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In my late 20’s, I changed careers from being a dancer to going back to school and becoming a Dental Hygienist. That drastic decrease in activity level quickly increased my weight. I never had to think about food before, I could largely just eat what I wanted (and I did not eat well) and not gain weight. Becoming sedentary and stressed with school, a new career, and living a good life packed on the pounds and for 15 years played the “diet” game of losing weight and gaining it back. My heaviest was at 275 pounds and I am 5 foot 8 inches.
Then in 2012, I had to have a complete hysterectomy and all the hormone fun that came along with that was a nail in the coffin for my weight. After “going to the gym” and using a trainer for almost 2 years without the results I wanted, I knew something had to change, and that something was my nutrition and habits. So I started educating myself through science and really understanding how our bodies work with nutrition. I sorted out the “woo” from the facts and the weight came off, and stayed off, because I was no longer “dieting” but eating for nutrition.
I started getting certifications for nutrition (having a science background was helpful) and fitness (having a dance background was helpful!). People noticed and asked me to help them. All this while I was working as a Dental Hygienist, but when my Dr retired, after 20 years of me being in the career, I decided to start my business to help all those Obese and Morbidly Obese people who feel like I felt, reach their goals and stay there. So in October of 2018, Your Lean Life LLC was born and I have helped hundreds of people reach their goals through learning about nutrition.
Fat loss starts with nutrition, so I help clients:
Understanding how nutrition works
Understand how their body works with nutrition
Understand how to form solid routines and habits
Learn how to navigate daily life (the good & bad!)
Learn how activity and exercise may play into your goals
For my clients, I create a program tailor made for them and their goals and guide them to gain the knowledge to lose fat and maintain their lean life. There are no supplements, bars, shakes, or fads to buy into! Whether they need private One-On-One Nutritional Coaching or MiniGroup Coaching, they can learn the tools for healthy nutrition to lose fat and maintain their lean life, all while receiving the accountability, support, motivation and education to keep them at their goal for years to come.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Asking for testimonials and referrals! It is noticeable when people lose fat and many people around them want to know “what did you do?!” People who lose fat successfully and improve their habits and relationship with food often want to shout it from the rooftops. Some people are more quiet and want to just go on with life, so by purposely asking for testimonials and referrals of all my clients, others can be inspired to ask for help on their journey. Not everyone is willing to share, and that is OK, but those that do, really do help build my clientele.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency is key. As with nutrition and fitness, being seen on social media, amidst the various levels of “competition” is tough! Just because you have a creative marketing campaign doesn’t mean you can actually deliver. I work a mix of marketing that may hit home with my niche, but also share testimonials and befores and afters. I have a weekly rotation of where and how I post so that I am seen often. Even if someone isn’t looking NOW, they may remember a post when they are ready. Being consistent in posting means those who need me will be reminded daily that maybe “today is the day”. My posts are also genuine and by me. Often times they are things I have discussed or said to clients!
