We were lucky to catch up with Lionel Taurus recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lionel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
My best investment was definitely in all the money I spent building a computer capable of handling any type of project I envisioned, from product design to illustrations, and most importantly those last years, motion design and 3D.
So often, people are afraid of upgrading what they are using to work because of its cost, but it can truly make a significant improvement in their process and creativity.
So many times in the past, when I was working on 3D projects on my first computer (a Mac Book Pro), it was taking sometimes hours to design and produce anything!
Imagine spending hours/days modeling a car in 3D, then to see the result of your work, you have to wait at least 2 hours, and if it wasn’t enough, if you made a mistake in your final image and want to correct it, to see the correction you have to wait another 2 hours… that was my world.
At that time I found myself abandoning so many times projects because of how lengthy those back and forth were during my design process. When I changed my computer, hours became minutes, then for some projects, minutes became seconds or even real-time results.
What came out of it was that I was able to spend more time bringing my vision to life without sacrificing time to do it because everything was faster. It also gave me more confidence to start doing freelance projects and pay back the money I spent on the computer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Multidisciplinary Designer working at Squarespace & Unfold, a website building and hosting platform that allows users to create and manage professional-looking websites and content without extensive technical knowledge.
My job is to build and design a user-friendly interface with customizable templates and content, making it popular for individuals, businesses, and artists seeking an easy and visually appealing way to establish an online presence.
My day-to-day job often consists of taking a leadership role in driving and overseeing design projects. This involves guiding the design team, setting design direction, and ensuring the alignment of design efforts with overall product and company goals and the engineers.
What I love the best about my job is to always explore and push further industry trends, emerging technologies, and design methodologies. I love keeping the design team updated and influencing the adoption of new tools or processes to help create a better experience for our users.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think that NFTs are one of the most efficient ways to provide a new revenue stream for digital artists by allowing them to tokenize and sell their digital creations directly to collectors. This can empower artists and offer a decentralized way to monetize their work. NFTs in my opinion, represent an evolution in the way digital art is valued and collected. This shift can be embraced by designers as a transformative moment for the creative industry.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to build all the tools people need to become online entrepreneurs and creators and make design accessible to everyone.
