We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lionel B. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lionel below.
Lionel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As a youth, I always appreciated hard work and seeing the benefits in it. However often times hard work goes unappreciated and you feel undervalued. You can work 80 hours and add 20 hours of overtime and all you gonna get is a few extra dollars, but then your quality of life is all messed up, and you’re still living check to check. By working a regular 9 to 5, I knew that I was shorting myself. I knew I had way more to offer than just existing. My spirit wouldn’t allow me to be comfortable with just work. People knew I was special and that I needed to be seen.
Lionel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a YouTuber, artist and entrepreneur. Currently my channel The Lionel B Show sits at over 105 million views and close to 400,000 subscribers. To get those kinda numbers in 4 years, it took extreme discipline and great mental focus. I’m a Capricorn so the hustle is always in me. Consistency is always key. You get back what you put into your creativity. Walking the road less traveled, creates an amazing lane for you to thrive in. My proudest moment is buying my mother’s dream car, and her enjoying it before she passed away from Covid-19. I hit the Billboard music charts and iTunes charts, got 9 million views on one video and yet no better feeling than surprising my mother with her dream car.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I became a YouTube sensation while living in my car, and being a single father to my son. I kept creating content, wherever and however I could and stayed consistent everyday, no matter the lack of funds I had at the time. Where there is a Will, there is surely always a way. My phone wasn’t even on, I had to use restaurants free Wi-Fi just to upload videos from my phone that I edited with iMovie.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that, a few closed doors doesn’t mean it’s over. It means a new door is opening and you just have to keep going. When the right door opens, then everything makes sense. When I was applying for regular jobs and not getting them, I was feeling down and out, until I realized that wasn’t the lane I was supposed to be in to begin with. Find your purpose, and fuel your passion.
