We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Linxin Lu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Linxin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From an early age, my passion for pursuing a creative and artistic path professionally was ignited. It all started during my time in kindergarten when my family frequently organized outdoor activities. Among those experiences, one activity stood out to me the most – being in control of the camera. As a child, this was my first true canvas, and I found tremendous joy in capturing moments through the lens.
Within the confined frame of the viewfinder, I discovered a world of changing light and captivating shapes. It was an exhilarating experience to witness these elements unfold on a small piece of film. From framing shots with my thumb-sized perspective to exploring paper and packaging design, I began expanding the space for my imagination in different ways, bringing it to life in three dimensions.
As I progressed into high school, a realization started to take hold – I had a deep passion for visual storytelling. There wasn’t a specific moment or sign that triggered my desire to pursue a creative path. Instead, it was the dynamic nature of storytelling itself, evolving through various mediums, that shaped my identity. Growing up, I was exposed to a diverse range of stories, and it fueled my ambition to present the narratives I witnessed and conceived in my mind to the wider public, conveying them in a form that resonated with me.
Linxin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Linxin Lu, and I currently work in Graphic Design and Advertising. Within the realm of art, my focus primarily revolves around photography and printmaking. I wear multiple hats as a graphic designer, art director, photographer, and printmaker. What truly captivates me is the art of storytelling across various fields and mediums.
On the business side, I thrive on delving into the distinctiveness of brands and crafting narratives that align with their tone and resonate with their target audience. When it comes to advertising, my goal is to tell compelling stories through the artistic expression of the brand, leaving a profound impact on the hearts of the viewers. Simultaneously in my art field, I use photography and printmaking to convey the stories I personally witness and envision. Photography allows me to combine my childhood fascination with my formal education in graphic composition, resulting in a unique and intimate style. As for printmaking, it serves as a natural extension of my journey as a photographer, enabling me to reinterpret photography through illustrations or depict worlds that photography alone cannot capture.
I take pride in my multidirectional development, as it empowers me to contribute distinct and visually captivating advertisements. Whether it’s through photography, printmaking, or graphic design, each discipline supports and enhances my creative endeavors in different ways.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creator is the ability to bring imagination to life and evoke emotion in others, and most importantly, to communicate with others in different forms. It’s the interactive dialogue that truly captivates me. Whether it is a change in the mood of the viewer or a wiggle in the brain, it is the interactive communication that I love and seek. Just like the Miro project I worked on with Zhentao Xia, miro is an online collaboration software with a variety of features to meet the needs of workers in various industries. I use authority bias, a real topic that exists in society and that many people are troubled by. I hope that through Miro everyone will have the same editing capabilities and that everyone will have an area in the online workplace where they can have a voice. On Miro, we can work on the same page and foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment for all. My goal is to establish effective communication with the audience by utilizing the brand’s support within the campaign I create.
Through my personal art, I aim to evoke a range of emotions and offer a unique perspective on the world. My printmaking technique involves breaking down my face and surroundings, then reconstructing them to match my vision. This approach enables me to convey my ideas visually and connect with others through my creations.
For me, art is an exceptional and invaluable medium of communication. It grants us a unique opportunity to share fragments of ourselves with the world, forging meaningful connections. Whether it leaves a lasting impact or leaves a fleeting impression, it is the captivating chemistry within the human mind that makes being an artist or creative incredibly rewarding.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn constant self-doubt originating from a strict artistic examination in China. In order to gain admission to an art school when we were in high school, we were required to excel in painting realistic portraits and still-life compositions, to go through a basic painting exam. Striving for realism, I would question if my work accurately portrayed the objects and the intended expression. Unfortunately, this tendency to question myself persisted in my design work. Am I effectively conveying the intended story? Am I doing a good enough job? Constant self-questioning fueled a never-ending pursuit of perfection, leading to creative stagnation. To escape the pressure, I turned to film photography and printmaking in my time outside of work, where there was no room for self-doubt. In this journey, I realized that letting go of constant self-doubt is essential for personal growth and artistic expression. By releasing the need for perfection and embracing the imperfections and surprises that arise, I discovered a renewed sense of freedom and joy in my creative field.
