We were lucky to catch up with Linsey Brashears recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Linsey, thanks for joining us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
The craziest thing to happen to me as a photographer was a friend of mine lost her aunt and the family had asked me to photograph the funeral. It’s one of those things you can’t really prepare for because it just probably never happens, but I showed up and did what they asked me to do. That was a first and only time experience!
Linsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I would like to start off by saying that I got into photography somewhat later in life and while I’ve never had any formal education learning it, I think I have been able to create some amazing photos. I want to shoot subjects that look interesting, but want to see what I can do with them. I love taking an image and really tweaking it to my liking! I never know how an image will turn out, which I think adds to the fun and excitement I get out of doing what I do.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I bought my first serious camera when I was about 25. It took me a while to build my inventory of lenses and eventually, other cameras. They all do the same thing to an extent, but they also do different things depending on the look I’m going for. I actually used to work in a sewer treatment plant and would use money I made from working overtime to buy different things I was needing. I joke that I had to do dirty work to finance what I love doing.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
A lot of the work I do is for myself, but I have gotten a lot of referrals from friends, family and coworkers. They all seem to mention me when they talk to someone who’s looking to have some family photos taken or they want a unique piece of art for their home. They know I’m versatile in the work that I do.
