We were lucky to catch up with Linneka Watson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Linneka, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey in graphic design began during my sophomore year of high school. At that time, I decided to run for class president and needed promotional materials for my campaign. Unsure of who could create them, I took matters into my own hands and designed the posters and other campaign materials myself.
To my surprise, people started noticing my work and inquired about my services. What initially started as a hobby soon turned into professional work as I began receiving commissions for banners, logos, flyers, and more. I even had the opportunity to create the official schedule for our basketball team, as my principal recognized my skills and trusted me with important projects.
Being a self-taught graphic designer, I had the advantage of exploring and practicing design at my own pace. By the time I graduated from high school, I had already accumulated enough work to establish a professional portfolio.
With a passion for design in my heart, I enrolled in Grambling State University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. Throughout my college years, I actively sought out opportunities on and off campus to showcase my work while simultaneously earning my degree. Whether it was creating designs for student organizations or collaborating with local businesses, I seized every chance to refine my skills and gain practical experience.
By combining my marketing education with my design expertise, I gained a unique perspective on how visual communication impacts brand identity and consumer behavior. This knowledge enhanced my ability to create designs that not only looked visually appealing but also effectively conveyed messages and met business objectives.
While self-teaching allowed me to embark on my design journey earlier, I recognized the value of continuous learning and sought ways to bridge any gaps in my knowledge. I have taken advantage of online tutorials, design forums, and industry resources to stay updated with the latest design trends, software techniques, and best practices.
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered challenges, including limited resources, time constraints, and moments of self-doubt. However, my dedication, passion, and drive to excel in the field of graphic design have propelled me forward, allowing me to overcome these obstacles and continually expand my skill set.
I hope that my story as a self-taught graphic designer showcases the power of passion, perseverance, and seizing opportunities to learn and grow within the creative industry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One significant moment of pivoting in my career occurred when I made the decision to work at a Marketing and PR firm as a Graphic Designer while also having my own graphic design business. Initially, I had been solely focused on building my business, but I recognized an opportunity to pursue my career in a corporate setting.
My decision required careful planning and balancing responsibilities effectively. I had to learn to strategically manage my time, dividing my attention between my job and my business. It has been a challenging yet rewarding experience that has given me the platform to participate in a variety of diverse project opportunities for firm while at the same time supporting my personal creative vision. However, my personal business has also allowed me to serve a broader range of clients.
This experience has taught me the importance of adaptability, time management, and effective communication. Juggling two professional commitments required me to refine my organizational skills, prioritize tasks, and maintain open lines of communication with clients, colleagues, and team members. I quickly learned to navigate competing deadlines, switch between different creative mindsets, and ensure that I consistently delivered high-quality work to both my agency clients and my independent clientele.
Overall, this pivotal moment in my career demonstrated my ability to adapt to new challenges, embrace multiple professional roles, and find harmony between my corporate and entrepreneurial endeavors. It also highlighted my dedication to continually grow as a graphic designer, blending the stability and collaborative opportunities of agency work with the freedom and creative control of running my own business.
