We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindy Fox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindy below.
Lindy , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
I think the biggest challenge for fashion design companies is the cost of marketing, and the cost of development of the goods.
It takes alot of money to purchase the raw materials and pay your team to assemble the samples, all the while not knowing if it’ll eventually sell. Secondly, it costs way more money than people think to put our marketing and ads so that people will know to shop your brand. The big companies of course have lots of money to spend on advertising and us small companies do not.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up on a working produce farm in California growing walnuts, plums and oranges. I was surrounded by nature and seeing first hand the process of how food goes from a seed all the way to your table. I liken that process to how clothing goes from a cotton seed or wool fiber, all the way to your closet. That is why I prefer firstly to work with natural fibers but I can’t say I’m a 100% natural fibers brand. There are some properties of synthetic fibers that perform better for certain functions, so those are on offer as well.
What my brand is most known for is unexpected color and material combinations, serving a fashion forward clientele, not afraid to take risks. I like to say when you come to Lindy Fox you’re looking for something different.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Currently I share a sewing studio space with a good friend. We split the rent and teach sewing classes out of the space. As soon as I met her I knew we had to collaborate in some way. Hopefully leads to further projects together!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my business Instagram years ago and back then it was just little by little messaging people introducing them to the brand! I believe in small, personal steps to create growth.
