We recently connected with Lindsy Gjesvold and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lindsy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Over four years ago I was working at a front desk for a corporate job. I appreciated all that I learned at that job but at the end of the day I was unfulfilled because I wanted to be able to work for myself and serve a purpose while I was doing that. I was dreaming of all the ideas I had for creating a more meaningful life, where I could call the shots. When I began Targhee Botanicals I was working full time either waitressing or at a wonderful Property Management company. I was eventually blessed to have such a high customer demand that it pushed me to become a full time entrepreneur working for Targhee Botanicals. I have now been working solely for myself for over a full year now and there are some days where I feel like the level of responsibility can become daunting, and that it would be easier to have the same routine everyday working a simple job. I of course know that for me I become bored with that very quickly and will wish for exactly what I have now. The basic fact of being an entrepreneur is that your company is a reflection of you, your mental state, your motivation, ambition, routine, and overall dedication. It is incredibly rewarding and equally as risky if you’re not intentionally giving it your all. Having the courage to put yourself out there in a genuine way to do what you’re passionate about always comes full circle but it all has to begin with courage. Being a business owner means that you are responsible for every department, decision and the ultimate success or not of the company. Everyday I get to choose to work harder than the day before to make this company scale and grow in the direction that I want it to. I am extremely happy as a business owner, even when challenges all seem to happen at once, but ultimately it’s a vehicle for personal growth and nothing is more rewarding.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Targhee Botanicals began as a vision camping under the Tetons after I left my corporate job and was wanting to have more purpose in my day to day life. I realized I could make a difference with the knowledge and skills that I had in botanical plant medicine. I am passionate about herbalism, and simple ingredient products. I avoid preservatives and unnecessary artificial ingredients that can cause harm in both food and skin care. I simply wanted to create products that have all the benefits with zero detriments. Working with rare and powerful tree resins my business partner and I finalized the formula for Complete Skin Repair that has tree resins that are challenging to work with, but extremely beneficial for skin healing. It was painstaking to create because of such high standards for a luxury product. Targhee Botanicals was a curation of our company values coming to life, to create a product that can benefit people with no shortcuts and to create a vehicle of success that can tend to the earth and to give more than the company ever needs to take. The problems that we are solving for our clients have been mind blowing. Our featured product Complete Skin Repair has been easing pain from inflammation, diminishing scars, reducing acne, increasing the moisture barrier in harsh climates and even helping soothe skin conditions. I am most proud of the feedback that I receive daily from clients that say that Complete Skin Repair has helped their skin in a myriad of ways!

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
This past winter was exceptionally snowy, and what seemed like never ending. As March approached I had hope for regular pop up markets and some more opportunities to see clients in person! Unfortunately March was just as snowy as February. As April approached I had the same hope for some snow melt and more markets. Unfortunately my small ski resort town was still peaceful with wintertime indoor activities, and not time yet for a great beginning to the spring season. As May approached I though for sure that I would be fully ready for more markets and in person sales but unfortunately the town was as sleepy as the dead of winter and I wasn’t sure if Targhee Botanicals would be able to make up for lost time this extra long winter. We somehow managed to make it through to June where regular markets are happening and the town is back to life with outdoor enthusiasts!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is an option with grit and the willingness to make the necessary changes to enhance growth. Being willing to pivot, change focus and really focus on actionable items that bring in cash flow when times get tight is key. The key for me to have the upmost resilience after this winter is being flexible, and not afraid of change. Not much time has passed since this hard winter but I can say that we are growing in strides and that what we chose to focus on as a company is panning out just fine! I just had to be open to changing plans!
