We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsey Villani. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsey below.
Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
As someone who has been both a business owner and have held a “regular” job (quite often even overlapping!), having my own business and being my own boss has given me the greatest sense of accomplishment more so than in any other job. As a very creative person, I have the creative freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want in my own business. However, owning your own business is not necessarily easier than holding down a “regular” job. Owning your own business is not a 9-5 job, it’s just about 24/7 and it is very demanding and sometimes overwhelming. Since it’s your own business, there is a lot more at stake and I tend to be much more critical of my own self. Also, owning your own business is not predictable. No day is the same and you never know what can happen. In a normal job, you pretty much know what you need to do, and you are guaranteed the same paycheck every 2 weeks. A business tends to have financial ups and downs, which is sometimes can be nerve-wracking. However, all that being said, owning my own business is exhilarating and truly gives me a sense of self-worth and satisfaction.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! My name is Lindsey Villani, a 15-year clinically licensed esthetician based in the New York City area, and curator of JuJubee Skincare. JuJubee Skincare is a wellness brand that offers both state-of-the-art facial services with advanced technology as well as a natural skincare product line. I have over 15 years of experience as a skincare expert with some of the top luxury beauty brands in the market today including Augustinus Bader, La Prairie, and Trish McEvoy. I have recently partnered with long time celebrity Esthetician, Jillian Wright, at “Jillian Wright Facials” located in the heart of Chelsea, NYC. Together, we offer high tech skincare services with no downtime such as Microcurrent, Nano-Needling, Radio Frequency, LED Light Technology, Ultrasound Therapy, FrioLift, the Oxygen Bubble, plus much more. In addition, my natural skincare line is 5 years old and thriving. My passion is to teach clients the art of skincare, so they understand which products to use based on their skin type, and equally important, what products to avoid – reversing skincare conditions and slowing down the aging process. I’m always surprised at how much clients are still not in the know of when it comes to their at-home skincare routine and using the most effective products, and I love when they have the best results at my recommendations after just a few short weeks. It really is the best part of my job.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
You have to have resilience when starting a new business, and even beyond! You have to have a thick skin, as owning a business is not for the faint of heart. There were so many times I felt like packing it in and going back to a regular 9-5 job. My industry in particular (skincare) is very competitive and it’s not always easy to keep up with new trends and the demands of social media. And then you have the financial aspect of owning your own business. There are times when you are in the negative or you have to put more in than you are making to invest, and that’s a big leap. People will put you down and not always believe in you. It may take time and patience, but you have to believe in yourself and keep going. If you have passion and believe in your message with your whole heart, it will happen for you, as long as you are reasonable about the expectations.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Honestly, you have to pivot a lot in owning your own business. Sometimes something that was once working, all of a sudden is no longer working. The skincare industry is very competitive, so I always have to make sure I am keeping up with the latest trends and what people are looking for. When it comes to the products in my skincare line, I have to stay relevant. For example: ‘magnesium’ was all the rage about 2 years ago and my Magnesium Body Butter sold like hot cakes. Then the magnesium craze died down and my Magnesium Body Butter sold less. You have your ‘tried-and-true’ products which are my staples, but then you have to have the trendy products as well and keep in the back of your mind that it may be temporary. The longer you have been in your business, you’ll likely be more prepared as what people want and can remain a few steps ahead.
