We recently connected with Lindsey Mazza and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I was born with a physical disability called Holt Oram Syndrome, affecting my upper limbs and heart. I became a lawyer in a profession that was full of barriers and built a multi-city firm from the ground up. My Dad had the same physical disability as me and was a also a lawyer and became a Judge. Our lives were paralleled. I spent my life not talking about my disability despite the fact that it was visible. It didn’t seem to serve me so I kept quiet and this is what I believed was keeping me safe. Then on October 25, 2023, my Dad passed away and my whole world changed. I lost my teammate and my mental health declined. It was through this experience that I realized I had to start rejecting myself in order to live authentically and help others. I started talking about my disability and sharing my life’s experience with others. I knew that I had to quit the active practice of law so that I could help change the world but teaching people about inclusion issues and the beauty in everyone’s differences. I now teach others through my Inspiration Speaking and Leadership Advocacy & Wellness Expert.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At the core of everything I do is self-advocacy. From the time I started school, I learned that self-advocacy was the tool I would require most in my life in order to ensure that I would be given opportunities. As woman in law who also happened to have a disability, my most critical moments of advocacy were ones pertaining to my ability to ask for what I needed and be able to set boundaries and say no to what was not aligned with me. I’ve realized through all of my work and life experience, that most people struggle with self-advocacy. Our people pleasing society perpetuates this need for people to live based on the expectations of others. When you learn to tap into your own self-advocacy skills, you are getting to know yourself so well that you organically begin living a life that is in line with your purpose and authenticity. This is what I teach people to do in private coaching, through speaking and through consulting opportunities. Leadership isn’t about leading groups of people, it is about learning to show up authentically in your own life and leading by example. The shift in your energy naturally impacts those in your life, whether or not you are in a formal leadership role.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that the biggest gap in marketing is human connection. It doesn’t matter how many ads you take out or cold calls you make, if you are not connecting with people on a basic human level, no one is remembering you. Throughout my entire working life, business has been referred to me because of the relationships I build with people. It is true what they say, people will forget what you say to them but they will always remember how you made them feel. I have always tried to remember that everyone wants a kind and authentic interaction and one conversation can change someone’s entire day or week. Asking people about what is important to them and remembering these details for the next conversation, will take you further than any paid ad.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
It is so critical that every member of your team is valued and has a voice. When you care about their well-being and are open to collaborating on ideas surrounding the improvement of your business, then you have an entire team dedicated to your success and the success of the business. A business or leader’s success is totally dependant on the team that helps them every single day – and they should be shown the respect and appreciation for their invaluable role.
