We recently connected with Lindsey Maroun and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a client that you appreciate them?
We continuously go above and beyond to help US active military members move their pets abroad. We offer them discounts and flexibility. I cannot tell you how often people try to book their own pet’s travel, then call us frantic because the airline just rejected their pet at the check in. Military members typically do not have much travel date flexibility, meaning they need to figure out what to do with their pet immediately. We step in that day to pick up their pet, arrange boarding, coordinate a new health certificate, then book a flight for the next available date. We always go the extra mile to help US military members because they deserve it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Prior to starting Feathers and Fur Express, I was a petroleum geologist living in California. Although I love geology, I was not very passionate about petroleum geology to say the least. In 2016, I was diagnosed with cancer, and it changed my perspective in a flash. I quit my job in petroleum geology and focused on my health and wellbeing for a bit. I wanted to start a business, so my husband and I decided to move somewhere more affordable and business friendly. In early 2018, my sister, Angela, and I started Feathers and Fur Express, based in Georgia.
Initially, our company provided domestic ground shipping for pets around the US. Angela thought the demand was there since most of the US based airlines heavily restrict pet shipments by pet breed and temperature, or they no longer transport pets altogether. She was correct, and our business took off rather quickly.
We slowly began arranging international pet moves for a few of our US military clients moving on orders. Because international pet shipping is primarily based on meeting the regulations set forth by a variety of governing agencies (ie: destination country, the USDA, the airline, IATA, etc.), it’s really a completely different business than long-distance ground shipping. Ground shipping is very hands on, while international pet shipping is more focused on communications, organization, and document compilation. Our company metamorphosed to only offering international pet relocation services. Angela started her own ground shipping company called Aniops, and I continued Feathers and Fur Express as an international pet shipping company.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Google Ads and word of mouth or our best sources for new clients.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We always do our best to make sure our client’s have a positive experience. Many foreign nationals and military members share info on Facebook group pages, and word of mouth is the best way to get new clients.
