We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsey Grohoski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Early in 2020, I knew I wanted to start my own website and social media business. I had the idea of having my own business for years before that but didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in. At the time, I was working a full time job for a local hospitality group and working a lot but I knew this was something I was wanting to pursue.
Since I worked 9-5 and sometimes at night, I would leave work and see my boyfriend for a few hours before he headed to work for the night, since he worked in the bars. When he’d leave for work, I’d start working on my branding and website. I remember sitting in bed thinking of words that aligned with what I was going for. I knew I wanted to work with brands that fell into three categories; fashion, lifestyle and beauty, which was everything I was interested in and loved! With that, I knew I wanted the brand to be girly, yet fun and modern too.
I can’t remember all of the different words or names that I thought but I remember writing down the word daydreamer and thought it was super cute. I think I saw it in a quote on Pinterest actually. I texted my boyfriend, roommate and few friends to get an idea of what they thought but I remember thinking, “It doesn’t have to be permanent but it’s a great starting point”.
The branding was something super simple I made in Canva and I modified it a few times after that before I invested in working with a graphic designer to get my perfect look that I currently have. I would spend every night working on the branding, finding photos that I thought aligned with the look I wanted to go for and building my website with a free Squarespace template.
Two years later and I love the name and brand that I’ve built! It’s definitely not a crazy story of coming up with a business name but I think it’s special to the time in my life.
Lindsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Lindsey Grohoski and I am the Owner of Daydreamer Social. I specialize in social media + content creation for fashion, lifestyle and beauty brands!
I’ve been in the social media world for the seven years and have experience in the fashion, lifestyle & hospitality, medical, beauty and wedding brands. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2018 and began my career. I took my business full time at the end of 2021 and am so glad I did. I love working with brands to transform their social media and increase their numbers and reach!
I specialize in organic social media management, paid social media management, influencer marketing, content creation and more!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started Daydreamer Social as a side hustle and kept it like that until the end of 2021. In August of 2020, I got my first client and gained a few more through the end of the year by word of mouth. I started to build out systems and learn what worked for me, especially still having a full time job. Luckily, all of my clients were super understanding of when I’d be working but they knew they could always reach out if they had a question or needed anything.
I don’t know if I would have taken Daydreamer Social full time when I did if I didn’t have the push. The last company I worked for was actually acquired and there was no room for any of us to move over. Since I had this on the side, it was my backup plan. Of course, the holiday season can be slow for some businesses so during December, I focused on my clients and worked to set up some new clients for the new year.
After the new year, January came and went and February is when it really took off! Some days I sit back and think it’s so crazy to be where I am right now but I’m so grateful. If you’re deciding to go full time on your side hustle, I definitely say do it because sometimes all you need is a little push!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There have been a few books and videos I’ve watched over the years but I definitely would say my management style and entrepreneurial thinking comes from the people I’m surrounded by. Whether it was at my internships in college, my full time jobs or entrepreneurs I’ve met along the way, each of them have taught me something very valuable. Whether the situation was good or bad, I’ve learned so many pieces that I’ve incorporated into my business today.
