We recently connected with Lindsey Deschamps and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I were starting over today, I’d definitely focus on one thing at a time. When I first started learning illustration and business, I was all over the place – taking class after class with no forward direction. Now, I would choose one thing to focus on for 2-8 weeks at a time and try to get good at that thing before moving on to something else.
I would also tell myself to practice drawing daily, even if just for 10-15 minutes. Time in my sketchbook has become so valuable to me over the years, I wish I had stuck with it more consistently at the beginning (and even now!)

Lindsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Lindsey Deschamps, owner of Lindsey Day Studio. I create artful illustrations and animations for rad brands and publications to use on social media and beyond. I love creating artwork that celebrates the little things in life and the human experiences we all share.
Bold color, nature, and whimsy are three things I love and try to incoporate into everything I make. I love bringing some fun and art to a brand’s social media page, website, YouTube channel, etc. It’s so fun to bring art and business together like this and I’m honored that clients pay me to do it!
Outside of art and animation, I love to read and hang out on the couch with my husband and my dog Lucy. Comedy TV shows give me life!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Several books have helped me a ton on my journey to becoming a working artist. Burn Your Portfolio by Michaela Janda; The Freelance Manifesto by Joey Korenman; The Crossroads of Should and Must by Elle Luna; Art, Inc. by Lisa Congdon; and Show Your Work by Austin Kleon are all books that I consider required reading for any creative business owner.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The core of everything I do is my mission of making cool art and animation as often as I can. Getting paid to do it is a bonus. I find that as long as I keep myself grounded in my creative practice, my outputs and deliverables to my clients and to my portfolio turn out way better.
