We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsey Baruch, a prominent Los Angeles based food content creator and recipe developer, a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lindsey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, you need a clear passion or interest for something, especially in the creative field. It takes time, and your willingness to improve your craft, dedicate to it, and learn everything you can about it makes all the difference; knowing that no matter what, this is what you want to be doing, learning and growing with it, and not listening to any outside sources that say otherwise. For me, it’s also about having fun – is this bringing me joy? Am I feeling inspired? I find that I feel the most successful when I’m aligned with that. I also think it’s not worrying what other people are thinking about you, and just doing what inspires you, showing up every day, learning, growing, and making mistakes.
Lindsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Lindsey, and I am the founder of Lindsey Eats! I am a recipe developer, food photographer, writer, and cook based in Los Angeles.
I develop all types of recipes inspired by family, friends, Los Angeles, and travel. My mission is to share good food that inspires you to cook. I tend to lean on seasonal produce, and my goal is to make all my recipes easy, foolproof, flavorful, and approachable for anyone to cook.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been present on my social media almost every day since I started. I think it’s important to take breaks, and I do. But my longer-term strategy for my social media is just always showing up. You don’t have to post every day (in my opinion) to “show up,” and you don’t have to be present every day. But on the days that you ARE on social media, what are you providing? I try to make sure I’m providing quality over quantity, something new that someone can learn, or something educational, or entertaining. I also am really grateful and passionate about my job, and the opportunity to share recipes, videos, and photography, so I think that gives me the energy and willingness TO show up every day, and I think that’s key to growing on social media: being completely passionate, vulnerable and authentic in anything that you’re going to share. With that consistency and drive to share, you will grow, even if it may be a slower and steady slope!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started my Instagram (at the time, I was only on Instagram!) while I was in college sharing restaurants in Los Angeles, not really knowing where it would take me, or what I even wanted to do with it. I started interning at Eater LA, as well as after college, managing social media and working on photography for Los Angeles restaurants and brands, all while simultaneously running my page. My last job before going full-time was as a social media manager and overseeing that brand’s influencer program. All these positions taught me a lot about how to run a business and the backend of influencer marketing (which was just starting at the time!), which gave me the knowledge to finally feel confident to go full-time. I was also making enough revenue to take that leap, and it just kept growing from there since I was able to put 100 percent into my business.
