We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsey Aston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
The education system, in my opinion, has so many gaps that need to be filled. Especially once students reach high school age, I believe more practical & basic life skills need to be taught. How to write a check, how to budget, how to balance a check book, staples in grocery shopping, and other basic survival necessities. It sounds funny but even something as simple as how to properly clean your home, basic car maintenance or even how to create an amazing resume needs to be taught.
Kim Kiyosaki said “Schools don’t teach you about money because they just want to pump out good employees that do what their told”. At this current stage of life, I have to say I agree with her. Of course, school is pivotal for certain things but lacking in more significant areas in my opinion.
I was class president two years in a row, graduated with honors, was a member of the dance team, apart of many clubs, etc. While that may have taught me fantastic time management, it also stirred up such intense anxiety for me – that for the longest time after graduating, I was terrified of making a mistake because of the pressure the education system put on me.
Now as a business owner, I realize mistakes are absolutely crucial for growth. When I make mistakes now, I may freak a little, but I’m able to take a deep breath and realize it is a natural human action to make a mistake.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Lindsey, newly 23 years old, born & raised in San Antonio. I’m in love with my high school sweetheart, Anjel & our lab terrier, Nova. I love travel, coffee & marketing. I’m a rookie content creator slowly starting to grow my blog page & I’m the proud owner of Little Picnic Company!
Little Picnic Co. specializes in all things charcuterie. We offer charcuterie boards, boxes, cups & grazing tables. We also offer charcuterie workshops- a 1 hour guided interactive class where you get to learn how to create your own board like a pro in the comfort of your own home or office! I also offer custom gift baskets, which is a smaller branch in my business but truly brings so much joy. We also offer brunch spreads & our SA Graze which features gourmet chamoy products, Mexican candy & fresh fruits!
As for my blog page (@lindseysatx) I purely post whatever makes me happy. I’ve been using it as a fun creative outlet but am slowly switching gears to having more of a content schedule. I post anything like bride on a budget content, fun quizzes & giveaways and my favorite places from traveling. I like to talk about being a business owners and the little struggles that come with it.
What makes Little Picnic so special, is that no table or board is the same. Whatever product you’re getting is totally unique to your event. Of course, if you see a board I post and want me to re create it, I can totally do that too.
I’m here to alleviate your stress because planning an event can be tedious! Once you book with me, you can relax & enjoy your event knowing you’re getting something custom to you. We love getting to create special memories for our customers and having the privilege of being apart of so many of your milestones & celebrations!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think showing my face on my stories & on my posts have really let people connect with not just my business, but with me too! When I first started, I never claimed to be an expert or like I knew everything about the industry. I was always open about my journey and I think my customers/followers have been able to go on that ride with me and see me evolve. I also think my sense of urgency when it comes to responding has helped me a lot. I’m still in the first 2 years of my business, so if I get a message at 9pm, I’m answering! I’ve had a lot of customers tell me I was the only one giving timely responses, or I was the only one who responded at all!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think a strategy that’s really grown my clientele has been getting out in the world and going to networking events. A fellow business owner has helped me realize, that you’re doing a disservice to your business if you’re only limiting yourself to social media. There’s a whole world outside of social media! Of course, that’s where I do my bulk of marketing but the reality is, we don’t own instagram. We don’t own Facebook or any other social sites. If something ever happened and the platforms shut down, I have a whole rolodex of people who still know how to contact me from meeting me at mixers & other events. And technically, going to these networking groups gives you the ability to create even more content so it’s truly a win-win.
