We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Zukerberg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
“She was caring, strong, and never stopped fighting for what she believed in.” That’s a great quote, huh?! I’d love to be remembered for the good I did for my community. With my business, I help folks live a more sustainable life while providing products only made in ethical conditions. I know that each time a customer buys something from me rather than a big box store, they’re voting for a more ethical & just world. I want that to become mainstream & I want folks to seek out businesses who care as much as I do.
Lindsay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started Zuke’s Refillery to bring sustainability to my community. Living low waste means so much more than paper straws & bringing your own bag to the grocery store, and I wanted to help people learn about that. I’ve had a passion for the planet since I was a child & I’ve always wanted to do something good with my life. Combining my passions for people & the planet just made sense in 2020 when Covid hit & I lost my job. After vending at farmer’s markets and popping up all over town, we finally opened our first store in October 2021! We just moved into a new, and better, location in July and it has been absolutely incredible!
We sell home & body products that are meant to help you help the planet. Each product is carefully chosen by us after researching the brand & their values. The products must be plastic-free, cruelty-free, plant-based, and free from harsh ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, and sulfates. The company must pay their employees fairly & they must work in ethical working conditions. We’re more than just a low waste shop, we care about the treatment of humans all over the world, too.
Not only are we a retail store, but we have fostered a wonderful community of eco-advocates in Delray Beach, too. We co-host monthly beach cleanups with a local non-profit organization & host educational workshops as often as we can. We write educational blog posts, share content from different creators online, and always try to offer ourselves as a resource for anything eco & ethical in our community.
In the future, we hope to expand into a larger store & host community events centered around sustainability! There is SO much to learn when it comes to helping the planet in an intersectional way, and we want to be the ones to teach that.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Easy- honesty & transparency. My customers know they can trust the products I sell because they trust ME. I’ve made it a point from the very start of Zuke’s Refillery to share almost everything about my business. I’m not shy about telling my customers when I have to raise prices & why, I tell them if there’s an ingredient in a product that shouldn’t have been there, and I tell them if I need to close the store for something as “simple” as needing a mental health day. I’ve gotten countless compliments on my transparency. In retail, there is a LOT of marketing & swaying customers behind every sale, but I have never wanted to be a part of that. I’ve always built my brand organically & with authenticity which I truly believe resonates with my customers more than anything.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Consistency is key! I have never been a huge fan of social media, but it’s a necessary evil when it comes to running a business. Especially if your target demographic is using social media all day every day! Follow other businesses like yours to get inspiration for your own content. Come up with brand colors and fonts to keep everything similar to gain familiarity with your followers. Soon enough, they’ll know a Story or Post is yours just by the colors in them! Posting constantly is not the secret, but posting consistently when you can is what you need to do! If you think you can post 5 times a week, EVERY week, do it! If you think 2 times a week is more your speed, that’s okay too. As long as you’re posting frequently enough for Instagram or Facebook to know you’re still active, it should be good enough for your followers. Also, if you’re going to be the face behind the brand, share it! Folks love supporting PEOPLE, not brands. Put yourself out there and you just might see an even greater reward!
