We were lucky to catch up with Lindsay Viker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, appreciate you joining us today. One thing we always find fascinating is how differently entrepreneurs think about revenue growth and cost reductions – both can be powerful ways to improve profitability. What do you spend more of your time and energy on?
Growing revenue is essential for a company’s long term success. Cutting costs can be necessary at times, but if that is the main way you are hitting your goals, eventually you will run out of line items that you can cut and will go under.
Each year, I have a financial milestone that I want to hit. A lot of times, I end up having to invest money up front to hit this goal. For example, I wanted to increase my website traffic from search engines. I invested in a dynamite SEO team who helped me improve in key areas, and we ended up more than doubling our traffic from this source. This led to increased revenue from website ads, and has more than made up for the initial financial resources I had to invest to accomplish this.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Lindsay Viker. I’m a food blogger at Everyday Dishes who loves to try out new recipes and find ways to make them incredibly easy for you to replicate in your kitchen.
When I first moved out on my own, I had absolutely no skills in the kitchen – or to be perfectly honest, any interest in learning. I survived on takeout, frozen meals, and the occasional meal back at mom and dad’s house to sustain me. However, when I got married, my husband and I were operating on a lean budget because he was unable to work while we went through the immigration process. We had to quickly learn how to stretch our budget, and learning to cook was one of the easiest ways.
I ended up loving my time in the kitchen and looked forward to making dinner each night. Through this process, I learned how empowering it is to be able to cook healthy and delicious meals for myself and my family.
Now, I want to make it easy for people to get in the kitchen and experience success. At EverydayDishes.com, we help busy people who spend too much money on takeout find realistic recipes that fit their food preferences and fuel their day.
I took over Everyday Dishes from the original owner in 2019, and am so grateful to have a place to share my favorite recipes and cooking tips with the world. I have continued to learn so much throughout this journey and found so many great new foods along the way.
In 2021, I decided to really focus on my health and fitness goals. I was able to lose and keep off 40lbs by following a high protein diet and weight training. Now, I am sharing the recipes that helped me achieve this goal. There’s a ton of high-protein, macro-friendly recipes on the site that are not only healthy, but absolutely delicious. Next, we will be publishing a downloadable guide that will offer tips for meal prepping, eating out, grocery lists, and exclusive recipes.
I hope you follow along with me on this journey and find some new favorite recipes in the process.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber helped me understand the need to set up systems and processes in your business so that your business isn’t a job. Whether you’re currently a one person operation or managing a larger team, having systems in place sets up your company for success so you can scale. This book helps you understand that concept and gives you some ideas for getting started.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Yes, we have display ads on our sites, affiliate links, and sponsored content opportunities. We are also working on developing downloadable guides, and after that will be exploring subscriber-only content.
