We recently connected with Lindsay Turner and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
For the past 2 years, I have not taken a vacation from being a nail tech. (Other than when I caught Covid and had to take 2 weeks off) Though I wouldn’t consider that to be a vacation, it honestly felt great to be able to relax and reflect on the work I have done. I took that time to come up with ideas to improve my business. I told myself that in 2023, I will take atleast 2 vacations, one out of state and another out of the country. for a minimum of 4 days. I believe as hard as I work, I should be able to treat myself to new experiences. I should be able to take some time off for myself, which is very important. Working 24/7 and not being able to take time off for yourself will end up showing in the service provided and your attitude.

Lindsay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Lindsay and I am the owner of Ace of Shades Nails by Lindsay. I have been licensed for 2 years now. My first interest in nails was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I wanted press on nails so badly but my mom said I was too young. When I graduated 5th grade, my mom allowed me to go to a full service salon and get acrylic nails with my graduation money :) I was the happiest little girl in the world. Later down the line, I tried to do my own nails multiple times. I purchased kits from Amazon, Walmart, the Dollar Store and each time it was a complete fail. 4 years later, my niece randomly said to me, “Aunt Lindsay why did you stop doing nails? If you would have kept going, you would be a beast by now!” The very next day, I signed up for nail school and the rest is history.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele is making sure every person who walks through my door feel special. When my clients walk in, the first thing they see is a welcome sign with their name. This almost always generate a ear to ear smile on my clients’ faces. Not only making them feel special, but ensure I am giving quality work! Quality over quantity is my motto. Majority of my clientele returns every 3-4 weeks. Some even longer than that.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am a very caring person before anything. I believe me being my honest self has helped and continues to build my reputation. I am here to make sure my client get exactly when he/she wants and to execute it to yhe best of my abilities. If there is a design or service that I’m not comfortable doing, I am upfront and honest that I could try but I am not sure if it will be executed how they want. This way it is up to the client to take a risk with me or deny the specific design in question. [Most times when I attempt, it comes out absolutely flawless. *Believe in yourself people!!*]
