We recently connected with Lindsay Shutt and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
Employee Cat will be donating 10% of net profits to a different animal rescue organization every 6-8 weeks. Our first drop will support One Tail At A Time (OTAT), a nearly all-volunteer run rescue organization based here in Portland, OR, that saves at-risk dogs from shelters that need it most.
Lindsay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in Cleveland, OH, drawing, going to shows, absorbing all the music, art and record covers I could. Eventually I moved to Memphis TN to be with my partner at the time. He was a touring musician who recorded all of his albums in our house. I was exposed to a lot of touring bands, music, and saw how you truly can Do It Yourself. I had a day job, but I started creating the art I actually wanted to make on the side and got my first paying gig making posters for a club in Memphis. After that I began making album covers and got to do a silkscreen 7″ for Jay Reatard that was released on Matador Records, and a split 7″ cover for Jay and the Oh Sees. Album and poster art opportunities started coming my way more frequently after that. I honed my craft and developed my style during those years. I eventually moved to Portland, OR, lots of life happened, and today I’m happy to say I’m working for the Streetwear brand Boss Dog, co-creating graphics with the owner / founder Mikey. We’re an awesome creative team, we have a blast and I’m learning a lot. We are also launching a pet apparel company this month called Employee Cat, which I’m so excited about. We’re offering apparel for dogs, cats, and world weary humans, and we donate 10% to charity! Aside from that, I’m still painting, drawing, working on show posters, and have some album art and band merch in the pipeline.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Creating art gives me moments of being fully present. It’s scary at first, then you fail a few times, and when it finally clicks and you’re cruising it feels amazing. The process itself is rewarding, and being able to connect with people through art feels like pure joy. I’ve never been one for words, my art says it better for me.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of Mouth, and unfortunately, Instagram.
