Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsay Martens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I knew at a relatively young age that I wanted to become a Naturopathic Doctor {around 14 years old} but it was while I was in Naturopathic school where my passion for women’s health really became solidified. I have 2 sisters and they both went through fertility treatments to have children while I was in school. As I witnessed the experience from the outside and I was in the midst of learning about health, herbal medicine and acupuncture, I wanted to find ways to help.
A couple of years into my Naturopathic practice, I was starting my own family and experienced 2 miscarriages before I had my son. The combination of what I witnessed with my sisters and then my own experience with my menstrual cycle, my fertility and my relationship to my body drove me to start studying and understanding women’s physiology and health in much deeper way.
Lindsay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a practicing Naturopathic Doctor since 2006. That’s, ya know, getting to be a long time now. Quite early on in my practice, I focused in on fertility care. At that time I was so passionate about helping women feel really confident in their bodies ability to get and stay pregnant. And I had so many tools to offer as treatment for their fertility challenges {nutrition, supplements, herbs, acupuncture}.
Over the years, my passion has expanded to helping women feel confident in their feminine body, in their hormonal landscape, and in the qualities that make them different from men. So much of what we have been taught about health, success, and productivity is built on how men function. Women function and perform differently and we need to tailor approaches to health and success differently. I work with women in my clinical practice around fertility, menstrual health and peri-menopause. And I also coach women in a deeper way to connect inwards, take ownership of what they desire and create the life they love.
Women who work with me will find that we do a lot of thought work, energy work and honouring practices around the feminine essence.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
You know, my dad asked me this question pretty recently. There was a time in my career, when my kids were younger and life was feeling quite overwhelming, when I had the thought that I wanted an “easier” job. Being an entrepreneur is … a lot. And being someone that holds such sacred space for women to completely let go, fall apart, and build back up again is … a lot.
There were some darker moments, when I was feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, where I would sit with myself and ask if this is what I really wanted. And the answer always came back – this is who I am at my core. A naturopath, a champion for whole health, a space holder for women, a healer – I couldn’t see anything changing that. It was actually an anchor for me during that season of life to really KNOW that I absolutely love what I do and I wouldn’t change it. Even when it can be hard and challenging.
I also love that this profession allows me to grow and expand in what I do, who I serve and how I do my work. I’m never stuck or stagnant in my work.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There have been a couple of “big” things that I’ve experienced where I really needed to evaluate the path I was on and what I really desired for my life. One of those times was through my divorce which happened in 2016. It was a time that required me to go really deep on my own healing and self-connection work. It was time that had me questioning a lot of who I thought I was, what I wanted for my life and how I wanted to move forward. And honestly, this is still a process for me, a kind of constant unearthing of held beliefs and “limits” that will come up to the surface for me to release.
As you can imagine, there are many layers to moving through a big life transition like that. For me, one of the layers was that my entire financial situation and financial future changed. I needed to build my business more than I thought I would have to. As I was building and creating this business, I got very clear on building it in a way that honoured my feminine essence as well as my hormonal ebbs + flows. I wanted a business {and life} that gave me a whole lot of space to be all of who I am.
This expanded my work into group programs and coaching where I could guide women to do the same. I started to create more offers around “feminine performance”. We have been taught that there is a certain way we should show up, perform and execute to be successful but most of those ways don’t leave the space for the qualities of the feminine nor the hormonal fluctuations that we move through.
Moving through divorce was very difficult and painful… and it helped me deepen my self-connection as well as the depth of my work in the world.
