We recently connected with Lindsay Macmanus and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. Going into it, I wanted the freedom to do things the way I wanted them done, on the time frame I had to give. At the beginning it was fun and stress free as it was a job I did to keep myself busy. But as time went on and my business grew it took on much more responsibility and life lessons. So many aspects go into running your own business, from the “job” of photographing and editing to being a marketing manager, social media queen, location scouter, client communicator, book keeper, and so many more roles. Some days I do wish I just had that 8-5pm job so I wouldn’t have to worry about all the hats I wear but in the end I really wouldn’t change it for the world. I LOVE my job so much and even though I work long hours some days, I have the flexibility to take a vacation when I want, or go for a morning coffee with a friend. Being a business owner is the perfect “JOB” for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a mom to 4 children ranging in ages from 11 to 18. Grew up in Austin, TX, played sports in school, went to Texas A&M, then went to nursing school and became an RN. I worked as a nurse for about 6-7 years and then transitioned into photography. Each year I strived to learn more and grow my business to what it is now. I have a beautiful photography studio in downtown Buda, TX and serve so many amazing clients each year capturing some of the most important moments of their life. My business and my job is so important and I really love waking up each day getting to do just that.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Keeping my current clients and meeting new ones are so very important to me. I am so honored to have grown my business mostly by word of mouth. When a client passes on my information or talks about the experience they had with me and helps me gain a new one it really means so much. And of course I love Google and use it as much as I can. Who doesn’t use it these days right?? Google gives us so many answers and information.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My business is definitely one that many people start out as a hobby, me included. I have always loved photography and also being around babies (being a newborn nurse, and mom to 4 kids). So when I decided to scale down my nursing career, the photography just took over and I grew it year after year. It truly was one of the best decisions I have made and I am so glad that I took the leap to do it full time and build a business from it.
