We recently connected with Lindsay Hanson Dukes and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was about 8 years old, I started to understand that I was never going to be the serious, career-driven type. I’ve always been artsy & funny & creative. I was diagnosed with ADHD later on in life & it makes perfect sense now why I do what I do. It took me awhile, but I nowconsider my abilities to hyper-focus, create, and collaborate as super-powers.
I went to college and after I graduated, I tried to work in an office. The minutes ticked by excruciatingly.
I know it’s cliche, but when you truly love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been really inspired by makeup and how it can let you be whoever you want to be. I see makeup as a form of creative expression & empowerment. Wearing makeup is not a rent that people “need” to wear pay a rent to the world.
I work a lot in the world of bridal makeup, but my passion is my work with gender-diverse clients. Providing people with a safe space and an affirming experience fills my cup.
My most exciting work moment this year was when I was a sponsor for the Planned Parenthood runway show at 1st Ave in Minneapolis. As both a staunchly pro-choice & live music junkie, it was so much fun for me!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think the thing people don’t understand about being a professional creative is how many hats we wear. Actually DOING makeup is 25% of my job. I am my own PR, booking agent, social media manager, bookkeeper, studio manager, and scheduler. The range of skills I utilize to run my business is so varied. It’s a fun job but hard job!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It is my absolute intention for people to feel like the best version of themselves. It’s a beautiful feeling when you can make it happen. I cry at work at least a few times per month.
