Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsay Dickens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?
I signed with Stewart Talent Chicago on January 8th, 2021 as a model! When I was young I would watch “Americas Next Top Model” and would practice my walk in my moms heels. A lot of friends and people in my life always told me I should look into modeling but I never thought I had what it takes. I didn’t think more deeply about modeling until the end of 2020. During the pandemic, I did a lot of self reflecting about my future, my talents and who I wanted to be. On a whim, I applied online to three modeling agencies in Chicago, (Stewart being one of them) and I got an email back the next day! A few weeks into my modeling contract, I also got signed with Stewart Talent New York. Shortly after that, I auditioned for Stewarts on-camera department and became an actress as well!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I became a part of the modeling/acting world really fast and am so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given thus far. I have a different, more unique look which I believe has helped set me apart from others. I grew up being bullied about my ethnic background (Italian & African American) which made me insecure with myself. As I got older (more confident) and surrounded myself with open-minded people, those insecurities became non-existent. I model and act for the younger version of myself who was told she wasn’t good enough. I want young girls who look like me to know that if I can do it all, so can they!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve always been very hard on myself. I felt the need to figure out why things happen the way that they do. At times when I couldn’t find a reason as to “why,” I just blamed myself. I had to unlearn that habit very quickly in this industry. You could be doing everything right but just may not be the right fit for a certain job–and that’s okay! I always say: sometimes the reason why things don’t work out the way we want them to is because there’s a greater plan in motion that we just can’t see yet.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think that there are many misconceptions and stereotypes about models/actors that are simply false. When I first started modeling, I received a lot of backlash. The backlash was surprisingly from those who I considered friends at the time. To their surprise, I didn’t let their words or judgments get to me. Modeling is more than just being “a pretty face” in front of a camera- there’s an art to it. Acting is more than memorizing words on a page-it’s about story telling. Both are not “easy” and both require a lot of practice and training.
