We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Curtis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It can be quite an adventure to move with a family in tow, particularly when it involves relocating five times within seven years – one move was even Transatlantic! As the parent of three young children at the time, the process was exhausting and I found it particularly difficult to deal with the amount of waste generated by the traditional cardboard moving boxes I was forced to use. This led to my life-changing epiphany – I realized that there HAD to be a better, less wasteful way to transport the contents of our home.
An entrepreneur at heart committed to promoting sustainability in everything I do, I decided to take matters into my own hands and explore alternative solutions that would align with my needs and values.
My search led me to the idea of renting out eco-friendly and sanitized moving boxes (made from 100% recyclable materials) – this was an incredibly exciting concept for me, as it not only addressed an existing global problem but also reinforced my continued commitment to sustainability.
Juggling work and a family is challenging enough on its own, but simultaneously navigating the business world in a new country also presented a new set of challenges that I was keen to conquer. While there were inevitable barriers to success, I knew the secret to overcome them would be to offer excellent customer service. I was thrilled at the idea of reaching others in need who shared my passion for sustainability – and so A SMART MOVE was born!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been passionate about sustainability, but it was the repeated exhaustion and frustration of moving with three young kids that led me to take this passion further and search for a reusable alternative to traditional cardboard boxes. It gave me the perfect opportunity to provide an eco-friendly solution to this problem by offering rentable moving boxes made from 100% recyclable materials, allowing me to embark on an adventure that would align my professional goals with my personal values.
We have come a long way since then, and have expanded our services to include professional packing and unpacking and move management services. Our goal is to provide a stress-free, efficient, and environmentally-friendly moving experience for our clients, and we’re proud of our track record of doing so. Our focus on customer service is one thing that truly sets us apart from our competitors – we really care about the people we serve! We understand that the moving process can be both physically and emotionally taxing, so we strive to make it as smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free as possible. We also take pride in our commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of traditional moving materials.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A recent story of how we pivoted and adapted in response to changing circumstances centers around our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the unique challenges we had to deal with when it came to our move management service. We had already offered this service before the outbreak, but it was during the pandemic that we used it to truly excel in supporting our clients through difficult times.
We noticed that travel restrictions and other challenges prevented many adult children from traveling to their aging parents and helping them move across the country to live with them or transition to assisted living. We also recognized the unfortunate reality that more senior citizens were passing away, and their families were left with the difficult task of managing their estates and belongings.
Quickly realizing that we could step in to help, we swung into action by dedicating our team to packing and managing the moves of this vulnerable senior community and prioritizing their needs. Our primary goal during this time was to provide a safe and efficient service to alleviate some of the stress and burden for the seniors and their families, and we did whatever we could to ensure this.
By pivoting in this way, we were able to make a positive impact in the lives of those who were struggling during an incredibly challenging time, and we’re proud to have provided a valuable service when it was needed most.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
In addition to referrals from happy customers, we have also garnered excellent reviews across our social media platforms. These positive reviews have helped to build our reputation and credibility in the industry, making us THE go-to choice for those in need of moving services.
It is always rewarding to receive phone calls from new clients who have seen our reviews and were impressed enough to reach out to us. We feel that it is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication, and we’re honored to have earned the trust and support of so many clients over the years.
