We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Coser. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.
Hi Lindsay , thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am very happy as a business owner. I am in the process of expanding my photography business and start new ventures as well. Being a small business owner does have it’s ups and downs. It will take some tenacity and thick skin, but it’s all rewarding in the end. Every little win is just another step towards success and every mistake is a learning experience.
The thought of having a regular job has crossed my mind from time to time. Getting to clock out and leave it on a desk and go home. As a small business owner there is no clocking out and leaving it on the desk. With the age of technology we live in today, you can take your work with you anywhere. So, yes, having a regular job, can eliminate the need to always be on call as a small business owner. However, all the effort and hard work you put into a regular 9-5 job goes to benefitting someone else and ultimately their bottom line.
The other thing that has deterred me from a regular job, is not being able to create my own schedule anymore. Yes, there are times I will work long hours for a few days or weeks, but the thought of not having to request vacation or sick time. Makes it all worth it at the end of the day when I can be there for my family.
Going into my 7th year of business I wouldn’t do anything differently, well maybe a few things…
But I couldn’t be more happier with the growth I have accomplished over these last few years. All the hard work that I have put in to my business is benefitting my boys and myself directly and not going to anyone or anything else.
I love the fact that I am leaving a legacy behind for my boys and future generations. Showing them that it can be rewarding to build something from the ground up. Watch it grow and succeed year after year with every little loss and success.

Lindsay , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
That Chick & A Camera is a photography company based in Saint Louis, MO. I am a proud mother of 3 boys who got into photography shortly after the birth of my first child.
What began as just a hobby quickly turned into something more. In 2017, I decided to turn my passion for photography into a business, and have continued to go from strength to strength ever since. My work has appeared in numerous international and online publications; I’ve been a featured photographer and even picked up 2 Editor’s Choice Awards along the way!
Whether it’s a wedding or a family session you can count on me to be there for you every step of the way. I’ll provide the expert guidance and support you need to keep things running smoothly and on schedule, and I go above and beyond to capture every beautiful detail and magical moment. Weddings, destination wedding, elopement, maternity, newborn, cake smash, family, etc…

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Just recently I was given the recommendation of expanding into a new market with the wedding & elopements side of my business. Going into a new market for photography can be a little tricky depending on how well you will be received as an outsider and someone new. But as a small business owner taking a leap of faith is what we do and that’s what I did. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only was I well received in the new market, but I ended up booking 5 weddings. Taking that one leap of faith has exponentially grown my business and set me on a trajectory for extreme growth in this next year. All I have to say is “Never let the fear of failure keep you from making that one decision that could change everything.”

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Comparing my work to other artists and creatives. Comparison is the thief of joy and can get you in the photography market, especially in a saturated one. There will always be someone better than you, but when you start to look at your work as being uniquely you, it changes the whole game. Because at the end of the day, your clients come back to you year and after year, session after session. Not because your work is like others, but because it is uniquely you. Took me a few years to learn that, and it still sometimes get me. But when I get out of my own way and quit comparing, my work comes out better than ever.
