Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsay Bullis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lindsay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was in my senior year of high school when it really hit me how meaningful and therapeutic art could be for me when I took an acrylic painting class. Not only did I find an instant love for acrylic painting as a medium, but I also found that it helped ease anxiety and depression I was experiencing at the time. After graduating I spent a few years working different jobs, taking some college courses, and trying to find my place in the world. I didn’t finish college, and although I met lifelong friends through my former jobs, I never truly found joy or passion in any of them. Things all changed when I gave birth to my first son in January of 2020. I ended up leaving my job and staying home with him for the first 7 months of his life. I am so blessed that I had the opportunity to be at home, but the isolation of the pandemic and the sudden change of motherhood shook me to my core. My postpartum depression only started getting better when I started painting again. I remembered how painting used to make me happy when I was a teenager, and the emotional distress I was experiencing with postpartum depression was the catalyst to pick up a paint brush again. When I started painting again it was just for me, to help with healing myself and as a therapy tool. It was when people began to relate to my work emotionally and take interest in purchasing that I realized I wanted to turn this raw passion for painting into my full-time career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Lindsay Bullis I am a self-taught artist and muralist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I use acrylic paint as my main medium, but I do enjoy creating mixed media pieces as well. I am also a muralist, painting instructor, and mom of two boys. In addition to original paintings, I create fine art prints, notebooks, and tote bags printed with my art. Commissioned paintings are available by request. To create my paintings I use vibrant colors, realistic details, and soft blending to create artwork that is captivating and dreamy. Nature, still life, and fantasy elements are frequent subjects of my work, combining them to create a unique visual experience that gives the viewer a sense of escapism, surrealism, and nostalgia. Essentially, I want to make the world a better place by making others feel seen and creating art that is immersive and magical. Discovering that painting was a way to express difficult feelings while also creating something beautiful for other people to experience was the moment I knew my purpose as a creative.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding moment I can experience is when someone connects to my work. It gives me an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and happiness when someone relates emotionally to a piece I’ve created. Knowing I had the ability to make art that resonates enough with someone that they invest in me is the biggest honor. Those moments validate why this is the path I am pursuing and although it isn’t easy it’s definitely worth it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to keep creating, sharing, and connecting with people through my work. Another goal I have would be to open a fantasy themed art gallery and bookstore someday. I want to cultivate a space to escape daily life through books and art, my two favorite hobbies. In addition, I want to be an example to my sons that they should pursue their passions in life, because life is too short to be anything but happy.
