We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Alston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
When I was a little girl, every season, my grandmother rearranged the furniture in her home. Each time she moved a piece of furniture, the space was completely transformed. Inspired by her, I started moving my own furniture in my bedroom at 11 years old. When I would go to home of a friend, I would look at their space and naturally start moving things around. As a kid, I just had a vision of how a space could be transformed and made to feel new. Now, as an adult, I honor my inner child by providing services for all kinds of people with all kinds of spaces. I have the ability to go into a space, see what’s there and automatically envision it organized and transformed! I truly believe that “When your space is clear, you just feel better!”
Lindsay , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA and graduated in 2011 with a degree in Fine Art (with an emphasis in metal sculpture). About a year later, I attended Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena, CA. Years after college, I met another woman named Lindsay while looking for a creative job and she asked me if I had ever been a Buyer. Long story short, she gave me my first job and that job led to another and another. I then began a career as a Set Decoration Buyer. For almost 11 years, I worked to source all kinds of interesting furniture pieces, accessories, antiques, and oddities for movie and television sets that took place in the 1900’s all the way to modern day.
After working 12-hour days, five days a week, I desired change and a calmer lifestyle and one day became inspired to create my own business with the skills I had learned along the way. Funny enough, one of my Spelman sisters was my first client! Now, I create my own schedule, and provide a service that just makes people feel good! When you have lived in a space that is full of clutter and you can see no way out, it is good for someone like me to come in and help you remove the clutter so you can enjoy your space! I think it’s important for people to enjoy their spaces and be able to use them when they want to. I have transformed many spaces and I look forward to many more.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. Talking to strangers and sparking conversation with people has helped me get clients. Also, reminding friends and family about what I do has connected me to their network of people.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
To be confident in what I do. Knowing that there are other people that do what I do, it has always been important to stay true to myself and always follow my gut. This means kindly telling someone no, honoring my boundaries, not talking calls or responding to emails after work hours, and always having a positive attitude when I am in someone’s space.
