We recently connected with Linda Karp and have shared our conversation below.
Linda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I have always loved creating and working with wood. My dad taught me at a young age how to be a wood worker. Starting with a scroll saw, I would create various items to give as gifts to friends and family. Everyone would tell me, “sell your items they are amazing and unique”. I knew my work was good, but always thought others was better and there would not be a market for my creations. As time passed, I started looking into CNC lasers and CNC routers. Very expensive machines, however, I decided to follow my dream and passion and took the leap. I researched and researched and finally decided on 2 machines that I believed would suit my needs. A lot of trial and error occurred when I first started, these machines are so different from working with a saw and miter. As time passed I began creating items that were flawless and beautiful. Next, step, how to market? It is easy to setup a website and business pages on social media, but I needed customers! I posted daily, went to local markets, opened an Etsy shop, and the rest is history. Sales started booming and before I knew it, orders were coming in daily and have not stopped. I guess the moral of this story is, just take the leap. You never know until you try.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My business is called DK Custom Gifts and I specialize in creating unique and personalized gifts made from high-quality wood, using state-of-the-art laser and router technology to craft each piece with precision and care. From custom signs, to home and holiday decor to personalized gifts, I take a vision and turn it into reality. One of the most rewarding aspects of my woodworking business is the opportunity to connect with customers on a personal level. Each custom piece I create is a collaboration between the customer’s vision and my craftsmanship. Witnessing the joy and satisfaction on their faces when they receive a unique, handcrafted item that exceeds their expectations is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that my work has the power to bring happiness and enrich the lives of others fills me with immense pride. Working with wood allows me to transform a raw, lifeless piece of wood into a work of art. The ability to envision a design, meticulously turn it into reality, and watch it come to life is an experience unlike any other. I am able to witness the birth of a creation that holds a piece of my soul. This tangible manifestation of my creativity is a constant reminder of why I am so proud of my woodworking business.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The hardest part of starting a business as most of us know is money! I started with my personal savings as using your own savings is one of the simplest ways to fund your startup. It allows you to maintain full control and ownership over your business. However, it is always not enough. I did not want to ask family or friends as that is the best way to ruin relationships. I approached banks to inquire about small business loans, however, the rates were high and I worried about what if the business failed and I was stuck with large monthly payments. I explored and still to this day, apply for grants. So far I have not landed any but continue to try. My saving grace was a small business loan from the government. With low monthly payments I was able to start my business and pay off the loan in a matter of years.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Etsy has been the only Ecommerce site I use and I am a huge fan of Etsy. Etsy has a large and engaged community of buyers specifically interested in handmade, vintage, and unique products. By selling on Etsy, I have had the opportunity tap into this existing customer base. Additionally, with its global presence, my products have reach customers worldwide. and this has significantly expanded my customer base.
I love the various marketing tools they offer, these tools allow me to promote my products and increase visibility. By using their tools I can run sales and promotions, utilize social media integration, and access built-in SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Of course it is important to note that while Etsy provides a platform and tools to facilitate sales, success ultimately depends on factors such as the quality of our products, competitive pricing, effective marketing, and providing excellent customer service.
